Hey guys I'm looking to build a top gaming computer for about $1600AUD.
Problem is I don't know much about computers. I have no idea what I'm going to need to build this new computer. If it's not too much trouble can someone give me the list of things I'll need to build a top computer according to my budget?
Im assuming you can use your old keyboard/mouse/monitor, otherwise just post what you can and cant use again

That is a good build but about the cpu, you can get the same one about $199 only. I m not sure if there are such offers on Australia or not.
Australian computer part prices are slightly inflated compared to just converting the USD to AUD, but i just checked and the price has dropped to 242.50 now
Hey thanks for the help, that's exactly what I need. And yeah I'll be keeping my monitor, mouse, and keyboard. Knowing me I'll probably need more advice in the future with this task, but for now it seems I'm on easy street, thanks for that.
BTW what RES is your monitor because if its not v good you should think about getting a new one
That's a pretty good system rider hope you could build it eventually.
Apparently my monitor has a default resolution of 1280x1024. It's a "Compaq FP 7317"(I googled my monitor). I hope that's good enough.
Yeah I'll try to purchase the items as soon as I can, I've needed a new computer for a while now, the one I have now is pretty ancient.
Get a better monitor. 1280x1024 isn't bad for general purposes, but for gaming it is quite small. Get something at least 1600x900 and preferably 1920x1200. You can use the 1280x1024 monitor in a dual display setup as well, so you have even more screenspace.
Save lots of money and buy this.

You could beef that up a bit with a 650 watt psu a 95W AMD quad core 4 more gbs of ram and a 5770 instead of the 5750.
You would also need an operating system. A 1680x1050 monitor would be perfect.
What... that system could max out every game and get 30fps minimum.
I get 20 - 30 fps on Bad Company 2 maxed out with a single core @ 2.8GHz and an 8800GT. Hell im using DDR2 @ 929MHz SOCKET AM2 on a shitty oem mobo.
Dont get what trillian says
Personally i love my monitor, it's great its a Samsung SyncMaster 2032. Got it a year ago and i LOVE it: looks fantastic, no dead pixels, perfect size great quality etc..

I was only suggesting that if he wanted to save himself a grand and still have a gaming pc.
If you want to go allout get something like this
Phenom II x6 1055T
Asus Crosshair IV
8GB DDR3 1600
Dual 5770s or 5870s
850Watt psu
1TB SATA3 WD Black
You'll want at least a 1680x1050 monitor to bring out the detail in the games.
Trillian you sound like a PC World sales assistant. My 1440x900 brings out the detail in games.. I'm sure you get the same amount of detail anyway, if anything you'll get better performance from a lower res monitor.
I don't think there is much of a difference between 1280x1024 to 1680x1050 when you bring price into account.

There is... there really is.
I have a 1280x1024 screen and I have run my computer on my grandmas 1680x1050 screen.
It makes a big difference. You can see more detail in textures and models.
Plus the extra screenspace is nice to have.
Edit: Go run hl2 in windowed mode at 800x600 then again at your max res and tell me you don't see more detail.
The screen res does make a big difference but that shouldnt mean he should scamp out on the quality of products, he can simply get a new screen

Where was scamping out parts for a better monitor mentioned?
You can get a 1680x1050 screen for around $150
I'm voting for the build that Bladerunner1 posted You might want to add 4 more gigs of ram as 4 is getting close to being filled with some games.
If he wanted to go 8GB ram he would have to drop the GPU to a 5850, and still then its just at 1600 dollars and then if he wanted a monitor it would be say for 1920x1080 22" LCD, $170.

Maybe change the motherboard to this one,
http://www.umart.com.au/pro/products_listnew.phtml?id=10&id2=106&bid=2&sid=56166 , its only 115 dollars, a cheaper case like an Antec 300,
http://www.umart.com.au/pro/products_listnew.phtml?id=10&id2=139&bid=2&sid=30183 , only 70 dollars, then he can afford the monitor.
since the motherboard now only has one PCI-e slot, drop the PSU to a 650W

Well by the sounds of things looks like I'm going to need a new monitor. I'll see if I can afford the original parts you mentioned Bladerunner along with that monitor since I might be able to stretch the budget a bit more. The Samsung SyncMaster 2032 also looks pretty good so I might check into that aswell.
But will my current monitor acceptable for temporary use for the new computer? Even for gaming? I'm asking this just in case a new monitor isn't in my budget so I might have to use my current one for a while.
It would be fine, Many people use 1280x1024, its just nicer to have a big monitor
1280x1024 is all a man needs.
Cool, then I think I might stick with my current monitor at the moment until I have money to splurge.
I use 1680x1050 monitor, which I like personally.

PC case gear are good, and they are also good for cooling stuff. It all depends on his location, because in brisbane you can go get the stuff you order from the shopfront that an hour after you order it. but if he lives in melbourne, PCCG is cheaper shipping
