Windows 8.1 preview: Start button is back, New tile sizes, improved search, 50/50 snap view and more
This approach of recognizing where Windows 8 needs improvement really underlines Windows 8.1. It's not so much an update with some stand out features and big name changes, but more of a refinement of the existing operating system. All of these minor changes add up to big improvements in the way you can use Windows 8.1 across touch and keyboard / mouse. Microsoft has had time to sit back and witness the reaction to Windows 8 and see exactly how people are using the product. With Windows 8.1 we're seeing very real changes based on that.
article too big to provide a summary, go read: http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/30/4377214/windows-8-1-preview-features-screenshots
Its just the start button, you don't get the old ugly glossy start menu back.
But can I have wobbly windows? What is the point of the desktop if there are no wobbly windows!?

And I am perfectly fine with that.
Thankfully there are a million programs that emulate the Start button.
It's a step in the right direction.

Speak for yourself brosef, there's a reason It open the Start Menu and not the Start Screen
How small can the tiles go? I'd most likely have them no larger than icons on the desktop, since it's pretty much just opening another desktop.

Its a waste of space.

I don't see why not.

Okay, that convinced me, Windows 8.1 on my next install.
Anyone knows when the release date is? I've heard it would be released in the last quarter of 2013.
No problems with the start screen here, but having the button back will be nice.
Windows 8.1: What Win8 should've been in the first place.
The button makes literally no difference.
I actually prefer it hidden, makes the task bar nice and clean.
I might've liked metro a whole lot more if it wasn't a fullscreen prompt. That's like, 1,800,000 pixels of space I'm probably never gonna use!
And I am perfectly fine with that.
the way its used is the same way as shoving your mouse in the bottom left corner in windows 8.0, it just opens the start screen, and for that I rather have the shove mouse in corner thing
Is this free to Windows 8 owners orhave we been betrayed?

It's free.

But in Windows 7 or below, if you have the start menu open it instantly closes if you do anything else. What you're gonna open the start menu and not look at it?

That's exactly what I do. Pretty much every program I open is done so using the search.
Having used windows 8 for a month now, all this hate for it is totally undeserved . I don't see why it is. It's a big improvement, adapt to change already. You have SO many ways to bring up the start menu which is even more functional now, who needs this button?
Some parts of Win8 bug me (especially with multi monitor support still being sketchy) but otherwise I can't complain too much.
Reaching things is still a pain in the ass compared to WinXP, especially when hunting for settings.
Why are people happy and saying they're going to move OS's simply because there's a button for the Start Menu now? What the fuck? There's a button now, it's just not visible. It works exactly the same as a visible button. The lack of said button allows for more room for icons on the taskbar.
Can't comprehend the stupidity of people looking for the slightest things to criticise with this OS simply because it's it's "cool and edgy" to do it.

I've been using it for about 4 months now, and I agree in most regards. Really the only thing I miss from Windows 7 is easy access to the shutdown button (with two monitors, swiping down the line between them is a pain to do at speed), although the search not including both "apps" and settings is annoying because half the time when I'm searching it's for something windows considers a setting.
Still, all my complaints are just minor issues, and the new start screen arguable is much better than the old in several regards.

Honestly, I almost want to switch to Linux just so I can have those.
