The latest arctic outbreak, with morning low temperatures at record cold levels, has caused the Great Lakes to rapidly ice back up.
The overall entire Great Lakes system is rated at 90 percent iced over, according to the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory(GLERL). This is the highest percentage of total ice cover this year, and increasing rapidly. GLERL has been using the same method to rank ice cover percentage since 1973. The highest ice total on the entire Great Lakes was 94.8 percent in 1994.
Lake Superior is now 95 percent covered with ice. That is up from 78 percent one week ago. The satellite image is fascinating and shows a whole lot of ice. Lake Superior has been frozen over 100 percent one time since 1973, back in 1996.
Lake Michigan's ice cover has made the most dramatic increase in the last seven days. The ice cover percentage has grown from 30 percent last week to 90 percent March 2, 2014. This 90 percent ice cover is the highest so far this season, and the highest amount of ice cover since 1994. The record since 1973 is 93.1 percent, back in 1977.
Lake Huron is also flirting with being entirely frozen over. Right now Lake Huron is listed with 95 percent covered with ice. It has been that way for the last five days. This is the most ice since 2003, and the record level since 1973 is 98.5 percent.
Lake Erie is also virtually frozen over, with 95 percent of it covered in ice. Lake Erie has been 100 percent covered in ice three times: 1978, 1979, and 1996.
Lake Ontario has finally started to have ice grow on the surface. It is now rated as 45 percent covered in ice. This is the most ice on Lake Ontario since 2003. The highest ice total on Lake Ontario is 86.2 percent in 1979. There are even reports of parts of the Niagara Falls freezing. Lake Ontario is the slowest to ice up because it is deep without much surface area for heat to escape.

It's so god damned cold in michigan. It takes your breath away when you go to start your car in the morning. It's also so fucking cold that the Niagara Falls are starting to freeze.
Western New York reporting in! Cold as hell here sir!
I live in Michigan, its been freezing here for a while.
So much ice everywhere makes me hate driving so much.
Crawled in an ice cave on Lake Superior, hells yeah

This year: proof againstagainst global warming

People have been trying to rename it to "global climate change" for a reason.

Damn that sounds awesome

stop being so narrowminded and US-centric. While you guys have been freezing to death, over here in the UK it has not even snowed, and to be quite honest it was a "mild" winter. Even in your own country CA is in a terrible drought
global warming means GLOBAL,
therefore you need to look at the ENTIRE WORLD situation
think before you speak people
Not only is shit going down in Murrica, here in the Netherlands we have the #2 hottest winter since they started recording temperatures in 1780.
It's almost shirt weather instead of balls freezing cold.

You might be just making a quip, but come on. The article itself says it's been even more severe than this at least three times in the past, and that's just in the 40 years we've been monitoring it. Let's not make this bigger than it is.

Don't forget the part where it was the wettest winter on record and there was massive flooding.
I just can't wait for all of this snow and ice to melt. Michigan is going to be so fucked if it all melts fast. We have record snow levels across the ENTIRE state, in my area we have well over 100 inches. Places are going to flood real bad, especially since most of the ground is really sandy, washouts happen easily.

Thing is, the climate is getting unpredictable.
Last year or the year before that we had a very bad winter.
Not good if the Climate is getting unpredictable in general.
Meanwhile in Southern California its a low of 60 and a high of 85.
So is this a good thing or a bad thing? Other than the fact that the Northerners are freezing.
Please make it stop ;-;
You gits stole all the winter cold from Finland :c
It's 6 degrees Celsius and absolutely no snow in Estonia. That is all.
A region of United States being cold because warming poles and a weakened jet stream is certainly not evidence against global warming.
Global weirding, ladies and gentlemen.
Here in Indiana it's not too much different, over the past month or so here we've gotten probably more than two feet of snow in total.

but it hasnt even snown or dropped below -1 celcius in Netherlands, what the hell.
hottest year ever
Definitely been an interesting winter here in Michigan. I've enjoyed it, however. Makes for some good donuts in empty parking lots.
10 day forecast shows that it's finally going to be above freezing, and the month forecast shows that it'll be in the 50's by the end of the month. Then again, this is Michigan and I wouldn't be surprised if it barely gets to freezing all month.
I was happy yesterday that is was 22 degrees outside.
This winter has been blisteringly cold. And yes, I can confirm that Lake Michigan basically looked like a giant glacier.
