Iranian Forces Start Military Training Near Afghan Border

Iran conducted a military exercise close to the Afghan border on Saturday, Reuters reported citing the Fars news agency.
The manoeuvre follows a 10-day naval exercise conducted by Iran's Revolutionary Guard near the Strait of Hormuz that ended last Monday.
The actions were in response to foreign threats, Iranian lawmaker Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh said.
Tension between the West and Iran has flared over Iran's nuclear work. The US has imposed sanctions targeting Iran's oil industry and the European Union has agreed in principle to ban oil imports from Iran.
French foreign minister Alain Juppe said recent reports had left him in no doubt that Iran was developing nuclear weapons and urged the EU to follow the US's lead in enforcing stricter sanctions.
Iran has responded to sanctions by threatening to block Strait of Hormuz, the gateway for most of the oil from the Middle East. [/release]

Last 3 pictures, Iranians are getting better at photoshop it seems.
Where'd they get that M16?
[editline].[/editline]
Hm, looks like the A1 version with that grip on the front.

GunFox would probably give a better answer than me, but the US has always sent some weapons to Iran, usually during Desert Storm and other conflicts.
Let's hope this isn't Iran saying 'if we go to war, we'll attack you in a totally unrelated neighbouring country you happen to be in, too.' Seems like Iran is a wannabe school bully right now though. However if they attack ISAF in Afghanistan they're going to get rather a more harsh response than a pathetic attempt to shut off the Gulf of Hormuz with what, compared to a CBG, is pretty much a flotilla of fishing boats.
Of course, I'd rather there was no war at all, but to be honest I'm getting sick of the dick-waving by both sides and it has to end some time. I hope it fizzles out and Iran goes back to being (relatively) not a problem.
They stand no chance really.
That last couple of pictures looks kind of fake..
Seems like Iran is a wannabe school bully right now though.
Not really. The Iranians are sort of saying "dude don't come over here or we'll punch you in the face", and the Americans are sort of like "that's awfully ambitious of you bro".
There's a peice of information that people usually post in threads about Iran that more or less shows that they're well with their rights to be nervous, though naturally I've totally forgotten about it.

The same place they got their F-14 Tomcats.
Also, at least it's the A1 meaning it's going to jam every 10 minutes.

Long story short the US sold weapons to Iran before the west-friendly shah was overthrown. Then there was the Iran-Contra affair, where Reagan administration officials sold weapons to Iran to help fund rebels in Nicaragua.
Nothing like stirring up the hornet's nest.

Do they even still work, surely given their age and lack of support from the people who made them they can't be in the best of shape now.

Well yeah, I suppose you're right. But didn't this whole thing start with something about Israel and WMD? I agree both sides have dragged it all out of proportion.. but please, whatever you do, don't drag ISAF into it. The last thing we want to hear back home is that the US Navy poked its dick into Iran one too many times and now our forces are fighting for their lives in somebody else's war. And judging by the signals, Iran is basically saying that's one of their courses of action in that event.

Probably not.

So if their outdated M16's are like the tomcats, are they missing their firing pins?

Probably an A2 that was dumped
the wording of the title is perfect for a sensational headline. its like something youd see in a grand strategy
That M16 in the photo looks like it might be a Norcinco CQ. (Actually it is, the butt-stock is a dead give-away.)

Which is a Chinese knock off of the M16.

According to that page, the Iranians even use them. My money is on this.
Seems silly though to use them at all given the rest of their weapons seem to be chambered in Russian cartridges.

If we go into a Maple Syrup shortage like Norway's Butter Crisis, then you can bet on it.
Ugh. Watch the US start another war.
it is believed that Soviet and Russian expertise has allowed Iran to operate, maintain, and upgrade the F-14 fleet. The aircraft are reportedly being upgraded with a new Russian radar, engines, and a glass cockpit allowing them to serve until well into the 21st century. The Iranian press has further indicated that the surviving aircraft have been adapted for a heavy bombing roll, perhaps armed with air-to-surface anti-ship missiles. Some 50 to 55 are believed to remain in service, but only about 30 of these are considered airworthy at any one time.
It does look like a M16A1... that thing has issues with the receiver, which is the only real draw back to them. The M16A4 is perfect, and the US Marines are getting a new upgrade on their M16A4's. They're going to basically take them and make them just like HK416's using Piston's, and will probably be given the designation of M16A5

Not at all, they have quite a few weapons that use 5.56.
