LEUKAEMIA patients with more genes associated with cancer stem cells have a 'significantly poorer prognosis,' according to findings published on Tuesday.
A Stanford University study found that 'some cancers spring from and are replenished by a small, hardy population of self-renewing cells,' which could explain why they resist treatment or cause patients to relapse.
The findings could be used to predict outcomes in large groups of patients and one day allow doctors to better tailor clinical treatments, researchers said.
'The clinical implications of this concept are huge,' said oncologist Ash Alizadeh, a co-senior author of the research, which will be published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
'If we're not able to design therapies to target this self-renewing population of chemotherapy-resistant cells, the patients will continue to have a tendency to relapse.' In past studies researchers have identified cells in a variety of cancers that resist treatment and contribute to relapse in animals, but scientists have yet to establish exactly how the process works in humans.
Dr Alizadeh said researchers had 'made very little progress in the treatment of AML (acute myeloid leukaemia) over the past 40 years.' 'We're still using the same drugs and therapies we've always used, even though about 70 per cent of patients with AML die within five years of diagnosis,' he said.
AW SHIT No
Back to the micromachines.
Hey, this is good, we needed to know the weaknesses to make the ultimate cure for everything!
I was making a small joke...do I have to put an emoticon?!
Hey, this is good, we needed to know the weaknesses to make the ultimate cure for everything!
Death.
Then the conservatives take this shit and fucking run
Bit of a misleading title. It's not stem cell treatment that causes more virulent cancer, but that more virulent cancers sometimes originate from a small group of cancerous stem cells.
Fucking cancer, how does it work?
The religious fanatics will love this

The title is not misleading, but not worded the best way.
It's not that stem cell treatment would cause cancer. We only found out that our own stem cells are behind some kinds of cancer.
Isn't not a misleading title.
Stem cells are pointing to a more resilient cancer.
Replace pointing with analogous word "showing" and you have exactly what the article is saying.
THIS IS NOT AN DISCOVERY WHICH WOULD MEAN THAT STEM CELL TREATMENT LEADS TO CANCER. IT MEANS THAT STEM CELLS WHICH ALREADY ARE WITHIN OUR BODY CAN BE BEHIND SOME KINDS OF CANCER
This is how stupid myths originate.

Is this in reference to my post?

Yep, I did atleast.

Oh good, got scared there for a moment when I read the title.
What smells like I Am Legend in here?
What smells like I Am Legend in here?
Nothing, because I am Legend used an anti cancer vaccine that caused mutations ironically.
This is simply the body producing mutated cancer stem cells, meaning that without treating the cause of the cancer the cancer will never leave.
Wow. This thread is a prime example of how misinformation starts. :sigh:

This should be quoted every few posts.

Oh Oh can i try?
"AND THE LORD HAS CHOSEN TO SMITE THE STEM CELLS, THEY ARE THE DEVILS STEM SELLS AND WILL DOOM THE WORLD UNTO HELL AND OTHER FIERY STUFF"
Good impression, Ja?
I was worried this would cause problems for stem cell research and treatment, then I read the article and was relieved.
Strait times is shit
