THE commercial tsunami unleashed by the iPhone has served as a launch pad for the videogame industry in Montreal, which hopes to seize on the success of Apple's smartphone.
Hundreds of participants in the two-day Montreal International Game Summit that opens on Monday in Quebec's big city will be looking for ways to better milk the gaming market cow, in the face of Apple's golden example. In barely a year and a half, the iPhone has seized 20 per cent of the portable gaming market and five per cent of the global videogame market, estimated at some US$50 billion (S$64.3 billion) dollars a year.
In addition to standard cell phone functions, the iPhone has an embedded camera, a portable media player and full Internet capabilities. It also provides third-party applications through its App Store, including games, social networking and GPS navigation.
'The iPhone democratized access to games, made it easy and affordable for consumers,' said Alex Thabet, CEO of interactive entertainment developer Ludia, a company based in Old Montreal.
'We're talking about some 300,000 applications today on the App Store. So it's an extremely competitive market that puts a lot of pressure on prices.'
In the last quarter alone, Apple sold 14.1 million iPhones, up 91 per cent from a year ago. And the California-based company has described its latest model, the iPhone 4, as its most successful product launch ever, with more than three million sold in the first three weeks after its debut.
Oh cool, I live in Montreal. We're doing something kind of interesting. Not that I will ever play iPhone games.

So people can't simply like the Droid more like I do?
Verizon seems to work better for me then AT&T being military.. and I get a military discount. It's stupid to assume people just hate iPod/iPhone. I love the iTouch though but I never buy games so I suppose this doesn't matter too much to me.
At least they're good for something because making calls isn't their strong suit.
And do you have to hold the phone the right way to play games too?
Hm...I always wondered what would happen if a gaming handheld was overpriced.
Come on 3DS show them how it is done...
I think they are rong
Most of the games are okay if you're bored as fuck.
Jesus, 5% of the overall gaming market. That's just insulting.
Barely any of the games are actually fun, some are shitted out like COD.

And only if.

I think Facepunch needs the "Bad Spelling" rating back.
There was an interview with Nintendo UK's head on Radio Five last night where he said that it's still up in the air whether iPhone development will be successful because of the extremely small profit margins of the people who make the games.

not when they throw insults every which way and call people faggots because of a preference and try to force their opinion on people and spread word that apple is the reincarnation of hitler himself.
Yay, just as I'm preparing for my first proper iPhone game.
I honestly don't care if I only get 20 dollars from it - money is money, and we all love money.
Now if apple would just accept PayPal (or in my country iDeal), they could make more.
Not everyone has a creditcard like me...

As far as hardware goes I prefer the Droid but I don't see how you couldn't like the iPhone's App Store better.
Of course I have an iPod Touch and that's good enough for me since I already have a decent phone.

Did you hear a whoosh sound from above your head while you posted that?
I find the iPhone to be a great device for entertainment, as long as you did not pay full price for it, and is jailbroken. However, I disliked most of the games as the controls are generally horrible
the problem with the iphone platform is that apple takes something like 40% of all profits made by your apps

30%, which isn't all that bad everything considered.
This "5% of the gaming world" is based on a bunch of people who have an Iphone and downloaded Paper Toss to pass the time. I'm sure the statistic is wildly off.

Since they mentioned cash in the same sentence I am sure they were talking paid apps only.
They're coming out with that game by bethesda that's like oblivion. That seems fun.
wohoo montreal

30% as said above; and considering they're hosting your app & possibly getting it and you large exposure, that's somewhat reasonable
ipod games always are shit because they don't have any buttons, which means there's no feedback to tell you if you pressed something or not. there was 1 awesome game called geodefence though, check it out
