• Plans for a Koran Burning Show a Gainesville Church's Bigotry
A Florida church that was denied a permit for its controversial plan to burn copies of the Koran on Sept. 11 says the book burning will continue anyway. The Dove World Outreach Center drew international attention after announcing its plan to burn copies of the Islamic holy text on church grounds to mark the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Gainesville city officials denied a burn permit for the center Wednesday, saying an open burning of books is not allowed under the city's burning ordinance. But in an e-mail sent out later that day, the church said, "City of Gainesville denies burn permit -- BUT WE WILL STILL BURN KORANS." "Things like 9-11, Fort Hood, and the honor killings... these are possibly not isolated incidents," Dove World Outreach Center pastor Terry Jones told MyFoxOrlando.com last week. "These are things that, if we don't stand up now, they can increase." Jones — who has written a book titled "Islam is of The Devil" and sells T-shirts bearing the same message — says even the death threats he's received over the plan won't drive him to scrap it. "We have thought about it, about the danger in holding the controversial event, and we realize that whenever we made this step, that this kind of thing could happen," he said. "But we feel it's that important, and the times call for some kind of radical measure in standing up." Interim Fire Chief Gene Prince said the church will be fined if it holds the burning.
Source I chose to link Fox News because the comments must also be read. :foxnews: :patriot:
The bigotry physically hurts.
Most Americans think the 1st Amendment is cover-all. Just because you can legally do something, doesn't just mean should do it.
First comment. "Let's see, building a mosque near the former site of the WTC calls for the President to defend Freedom of Religion....but a city refusing a routine permit to try to prevent a church from burning Korans is ... what? It certainly seems to me like leftists bend over backwards for Islam, but oh, no! not for anything Christian... Does anyone else see inconsistency in the reactions of the left here?" Yeah, building a mosque a couple blocks away from WTC is the same as burning books.
Who gives a shit. Let the dumb motherfuckers do whatever they want.
It's hard to tell if some of the people commenting are using some good sarcasm or are retarded.
couldn't care less about the books. but they should follow building safety restrictions. I would actually lol if they ended up setting fire to the church.
It's hard to tell if some of the people commenting are using some good sarcasm or are retarded.
Retards. Who the fuck goes on Fox for news? No offense to OP. :P
The times call for some kind of radical measure in standing up.
Well, at least they admit they're radicals. Also, the name of his organization is Dove World Outreach Center. Doesn't that name sound a little contradictory of what they're doing?
Who gives a shit. Let the dumb motherfuckers do whatever they want.
Can't burn stuff if you don't have a burn permit. They're breaking the law if they go ahead with this.
I find three things incredibly funny. 1) These people will go and obtain/BUY a copy of the Qur'an, funding muslim communities. 2) Muslims consider burning the Qur'an is the only appropriate way to dispose of it, as throwing it in the trash bin would be disrespecting it by putting it somewhere dirty, so burning it would mean it wasn't put anywhere dirty. 3) The pastor of the church got arrested for child pornography days after this event was announced. And he says it's all in the name of God/Jesus? Child pornography huh? Real devout; sick fuck. http://www.nbc.com/news/2010/08/06/pastor-terry-jones-arrested-for-child-pornography/
Uhhh who else did book burning? Someone refresh my memory.
Uhhh who else did book burning? Someone refresh my memory.
I think it was the Nozis or something?
I think it was the Nozis or something?
Yep, that was them. http://fcit.usf.edu/HOLOCAUST/gallery/01622.htm
I'm afraid all of us will die because of this dumb religion wars..
It's funny how most of the commenters are the same people who scream at the top of their lungs: "America is the greatest!", "Make America like it used to be!", "We're losing America" And then they completely disregard civil liberties by saying dumb shit like burn mosques and burn the Koran.
these guys had a sign earlier "islam is of the devil" not too many fans of them here in gainesville i wonder when arson will strike
these guys had a sign earlier "islam is of the devil" not too many fans of them here in gainesville i wonder when arson will strike
Maybe they'll accidentally burn their church down while burning these Qur'ans.
Don't worry at all, FP, give it about 2 days and half of this churchs officials will be in jail for child porn.
Retards. Who the fuck goes on Fox for news? No offense to OP. :P
A lot of people. Most of which have a greater intelligence than you.
A lot of people. Most of which have a greater intelligence than you.
Hahaha, I don't know the guy you're insulting, but I'm basically positive you have to try HARD to be as stupid as Foxes viewers.
People that take all their articles as satire don't count. Neither do senile old people that just blindly agree and then forget
The bigotry physically hurts.
I always found it sort of weird how Facepunch will mercilessly bash religion at any one moment, but when another religion does the same to another, it does its best to defend it.
I always found it sort of weird how Facepunch will mercilessly bash religion at any one moment, but when another religion does the same to another, it does its best to defend it.
I assumed "we" bashed them for doing things like this.
I always found it sort of weird how Facepunch will mercilessly bash religion at any one moment, but when another religion does the same to another, it does its best to defend it.
i dislike religion as much as the next atheist but i'm a supporter and defender of fundamental rights.
The comments on the news page make me cringe.
I always found it sort of weird how Facepunch will mercilessly bash religion at any one moment, but when another religion does the same to another, it does its best to defend it.
Religion is asinine enough to deserve legitimate criticism instead of shit like this.
I always found it sort of weird how Facepunch will mercilessly bash religion at any one moment, but when another religion does the same to another, it does its best to defend it.
something about disagreeing with what they are saying but defending to the death their right to say it
something about disagreeing with what they are saying but defending to the death their right to say it
Disagreeing with it is one thing, but completely bashing it? I mean, I've seen comments about people wanting to burn down every church/mosque/synagogue in the world, and "kill" every religious person there is. But when one religion does it to another, they defend one against the other.
something about disagreeing with what they are saying but defending to the death their right to say it
It's their right to say it.
