It's an old movie. Regardless,
I've read Tolkien, and while I admit that the books were in many ways different from the movie, I still think the film is a masterpiece. I'm sure it'll be remembered as a classic long after we're gone. I was just thinking about what made it so great, and while the camera angles and cinematic sequences were truly amazing, the soundtrack is what really got the person watching it emotionally involved in the story.
Call me silly, but watching it the first time, There were instances when I was almost moved to tears by the way they integrated the compositions into the movie.
Think about Aragorn and Theoden in Helms Deep as they prepared to ride out amongst the orcs,

Or the scene where Sam carries Frodo up the volcano.

In no other film I've known does the music convey so well the gravity of the events that transpire, nor make a fictional fantasy world seem so real. In ages past, when there were still kingdoms, kings and empires, and wars were fought using wood and steel, such music could embolden the most timid of men to take up their swords and fight as fiercely as the bravest of warriors. It awakens in us something primal that we have forgotten in this age of safety and ease.
In my opinion, the composers of the music that made this film art should be counted among the greatest of the classical artists.

I wouldn't call the movies "old" in any way, but the soundtracks are, and always will be awesome.
Love epic orchestral film music
LOTR and Star Wars both had amazing music that really helped to connect with the viewers and set the mood in the films.
Howard Shore is an excellent composer, but 2001-2003 movies should be defined as "old".
I read all the books two times when I was 8-9
I wish I read as much As I did when I was a child..

Nothing beats The Hobbit Soundtrack

The movies are of high enough production quality that they'll be considered new for a long time. All the Hobbit Holes were hand-built, all the crops were real, etc.
Way too much effort went into the movies for them to become old for at least 20 years.
I'd say maybe by 2030, we'll consider them "old" but they'll still be great. Hell, I'd still watch movies from the early 90s.

That song has been in my hand for fucking months, ever since I saw it one morning in another thread.
I was thinking of picking up the LoTR Blu-Ray set, and now I'm thinking of it again. Thoughts? Is it worth it?

Best not to just yet, wait until the extended edition is released.
Even the critics who hated the Lord of the Rings movie said the soundtrack was excellent, Howard Shore really made his magnum opus with this movie.
