• Nikon AF-D 50mm 1.2/1.4/1.8 alternative?

I'm not sure where to ask a question like this. A few people told me that this would be the right section so I shall give it a try. Now, I have a very basic DSLR, A Nikon D40 with a stock lens and a Sigma AF 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 APO DG lens. Last night I went looking for a new lens, one with a bigger Diaphragm so I can still take pictures in low light environments. I read up on these Nikon AF-D 50mm 1.8 Lenses and I was almost in love. The very standard for 35mm camera's in the old days and such, the "plastic fantastic", quick auto-focus and other pro's. Then when I went looking for specific reviews and tests with that lens for my body (D40) I found out that Nikon made these lenses in a way that the "cheaper" camera's don't support the Auto-Focus function and light metering. I also read that the D70 does support Auto-Focus with those lenses but still no light metering which means you have to set the aperture and the shutter speed yourself. Not being able to auto-focus and meter with the lens on my body (D40) means it renders that lens pretty much useless. In order to get full functionality from the Nikon AF-D 50mm 1.8 lens I would at least have to get a Nikon D200 body, which would cost me about 900 EUR/1185 USD/745 GBP. I don't have that kind of money laying around for a second body or a replacement. I really want a lens that offers the same result, taking pictures in poor light conditions. TL;DR - Can anyone help me on an alternative for the lens mentioned in the title for my Nikon D40? (Must have Auto-Focus and metering)
Get a 35mm 1.8. Its the equivalent of a 50mm on your crop sensor D40, it will autofocus no problems too. Should be around 200$.
Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Get that one. It costs somewhat more but it will autofocus, meter and it has a shorter focal length.
indeed, its 189 euros at the local photo shop instead of the 50mm which is 139 euros. But I shall just buy it for the sake of photography! [editline]02:09PM[/editline] My local photo shop didn't have the lens in stock and getting it from Nikon would take about 2 to 3 weeks. I decided to get it from an on-line store, will be delivered tomorrow. (199 euros is what I paid and I also got a B+W UV Filter 52 E along with it.)

I don't know much about filters :P I just chose the first package deal and got 14% discount on the filter. I also have an optical filter (UV) which is 58m (for my sigma 70-300 lens) its a tokina, my parents got it in singapore, are those any good? I have no knowledge of filters.

Thanks BoSoZoku and DoubleDD for helping me, I am a happy man. Hope it gets delivered in the morning. I will take my first shots on friday evening because my brothers are coming home for my mothers birthday on saturday :) Also, because I said I was going to this photo store, my dad showed his old Asahi Pentax SpotMatic. It's not working, it might be just the battery but he asked me to ask at the photo store what the problem with it is. I will go there when I sign my contract for work.
