ST. MARIES, Idaho — A group of survivalists wants to build a giant walled fortress in the woods of the Idaho Panhandle, a medieval-style city where residents would be required to own weapons and stand ready to defend the compound if society collapses.
... “There is no leader,” Christian Kerodin, a convicted felon who is a promoter of the project, wrote in a brief email to The Associated Press. “There is a significant group of equals involved … each bringing their own professional skills and life experiences to the group.
“It is very much a ‘grass-roots’ endeavor,’” Kerodin wrote, declining to provide any additional details.
not going to work
replace firearms with swords and armor and that'd be sick
Who wouldn't want a walled city?
Disappointed though, a walled city is not a "Medieval fortress". I was expecting something like a castle or fort, not some gated community for paranoid schizophrenics.
they wish
A half-circle is a regular theater, not an amphitheatre. Get your theaters right, dickwads.

Or muskets.
That's a pretty awesome idea. Doesn't sound like it's going to work at all, but if someone did it and it made sense through planning I would totally be in on it.
Sounds expensive.
This self-sufficient town plan has one major flaw.
There is no space protected within the walls for farming. Absolute failure 0/10. Would not survive illuminati-apocalypse in.

I'll admit, I just took the article's title from the NP. I mean, any idiot can build a walled city. I built one in Minecraft recently - I should post pictures for comparison.
It'd be fun to screw around in, but I can't imagine it being useful at all. It's not the 15th century anymore, gunships and mortars could create a problem for the walls.
If they actually went with walls, of course.

Uh, I'm talking about real walled cities, in the modern day.
Oh God, it's in the North East.
Please name it Winterfell.
Pleaaaase
Sounds cool. The whole no leader thing will never work though especially if they plan to build it for 7,000 people. Eventually somebody would rise to leadership.

Look at it in two scenarios:
A. If it's them being paranoid schizophrenics trying to survive against the 'luminatis try'n take 'way ar' freedoms, then of course they are fucked. Every modern government in the first world has aircraft that completely circumvents walls
B. If they're talking about the total collapse of society via say, WW3 or massive revolutions, then chances are the manufacturing and maintenance of aircraft and military equipment that would fell the Citadel with ease would be dropped dramatically. A walled city like this would last well against poorly armed, poorly funded, ect bandits of the wasteland.
A firearms factory, clearly a practical useful cornerstone of a community meant to survive in the event the government or civilization collapses.

CHILDREN! HAVE THEY NEVER EVEN PLAYED DWARF FORTRESS?
You guys really need a firearms museum to survive the apocalypse?
I would assume the knowledge to create, repair, and use firearms would be a pretty important skill in most "apocalypse" scenarios, how ever paranoid they are.

Uh actual wallbuilding is quite an endeavor. You cannot just stack brick upon brick forever and make a wall. There's curvature, towers to consider, backstop... and what type of wall do you want it to be? It takes a lot of engineering knowledge.

looks like the straight edge of the lemon wedge actually has seating rows, they're just super thin and tall
like standing on the steps of a mayan pyramid
I like the fact they have a huge area alotted to what appears to be a firearms manufacturer, and a firearms museum dedicated in the center. If it comes down to apocalyptic scale decline of society, there's several things that will happen under the current plan drawn out by MS Paint wizards:
>as mentioned, farmland not really within city limits. I assume they're planning on utilizing the area within the outer wall and inner wall area? Or is that juts a buffer zone? Seems really small to supply a city. You'd likely have to keep farmers armed and guarded 24/7 if it's such a situation you need a castle wall around the place.
>It's essentially a large trailer park built around a weapons operation, I can only imagine there will be plenty of quarrels and mishaps between paranoid and well-armed individuals within the city
>You've only got a few people to supply arms to. Then what? Shut down the plant and let it detereorate? Do you open up trade and manufacture for other surviving colonies, trading for supplies and food? What happens now that your neighbors are well armed thanks to you?
>has nobody played a tower defense game the outer and inner gate are way too close
>they used the term "grass roots" 0/10 would not huddle with in fear
That's really neat, I'd like to see it carried out.
I'm confused.
Where's the agriculture?
oh I'd also like to re-mention glenn beck's proposal for a similar city.

I for one welcome Andrew Ryan as my savior
Pretty good idea, they're just the sorts of people you'd want on the other side of a giant wall anyway.

They could possibly practice subsistence agriculture? I dunno, it doesn't look like they have enough space for that. and I'm sure whatever arrangement outside the walls they made for crops would be... shitty but they'd try really hard.
These minges need to learn resource distribution stuff too. Where ya gonna get materials and power when the shit hits the fan.

Farmland doesn't need to be protected.
erp I'm late
this seems like it would be ran by conservatives and it would be awful
Ok crazy people, Ill support you this time.
