(CNN) -- At the request of the Australian, Russian and Chinese governments, the U.S. Coast Guard is stepping up to help break up ice off Antarctica that has ensnared a pair of ships. The Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star had been heading to that area anyway, having left its home port of Seattle early last month to eventually break through sea ice and refuel the U.S. Antarctic Program's McMurdo Station on Ross Island. Now the icebreaker is retooling to help the Russian ship Akademik Shokalskiy and China's Xue Long due to "sufficient concern that the vessels may not be able to free themselves from the ice," the Coast Guard said Saturday in a statement.
http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/04/world/antarctica-ships-stuck/
We should have a massive orbital laser for situations like this.
i'm coming alright bb :wink::quagmire:
We should have a massive orbital laser for situations like this.
Indeed there has to be some justification for such a space laser.
We should have a massive orbital laser for situations like this.
Just drop a rod of god onto that sucker and be done with it, though you may want to hold the fuck on.
It seems kind of odd in a way to see the Russian and Chinese governments asking for any kind of help from the U.S.
We should have a massive orbital laser for situations like this.
now the NSA would just love that wouldn't they
It seems kind of odd in a way to see the Russian and Chinese governments asking for any kind of help from the U.S.
It makes all these nations seem so small.. They really need us to send one boat down there? With all the resources both nations have they really need us to help them... Well I guess it was going down there anyways...
we are going to freedom the fuck out of that ice.
Let's show those ice breakers what freedom is.
two days later "american icebreaker gets stuck freeing chinese icebreaker that got stuck freeing russian icebreaker"
That socialist ice cap is going to taste the long dick of freedom
We could use global warming for help
its all a ploy to trap every icebreaker in the world in the arctic, at which point the aliens can launch their alien icebreaker ship and take over the world with no conflict
its all a ploy to trap every icebreaker in the world in the arctic, at which point the aliens can launch their alien icebreaker ship and take over the world with no conflict
How'd you get a copy of the script for Battleship 2?
How'd you get a copy of the script for Battleship 2?
You glorious son of a bitch, I was going to say the same thing.
And then it's stuck too. Just ask Finland. They have built 70% of the world's ice breakers and knows how to break ice :v:
Was reading up on the incident, apparently an Australian and a French Icebreaker both tried to reach the Xue Long, but both failed due to too thick ice.
Indeed there has to be some justification for such a space laser.
To stop terrorists obviously. (oh and to cut out funny shapes in ice sheets)
Can't they just bomb the ice?
To stop terrorists obviously. (oh and to cut out funny shapes in ice sheets)
How to reduce the chances of alien invasion: Cut out a massive dickbutt in the artic ice.
I will just laugh if the coast guard ship ends up stock as well.
I will just laugh if the coast guard ship ends up stock as well.

The Polar Star is 399 feet long with a maximum speed of 18 knots. It can continuously break 6 feet of ice at three knots, and can break 21 feet of ice backing and ramming, the Coast Guard said.
It's a pretty impressive cutter.
We should have a massive orbital laser for situations like this.
I've always been an advocate for orbital laser platforms and this is just a legitimate justification for the idea other than, "it'd be fucking cool."
two days later "american icebreaker gets stuck freeing chinese icebreaker that got stuck freeing russian icebreaker"
200 years later there is just a line of icebreakers across the earth

The Russians and Chinese probably want us to get stuck so it's not as embarrassing.
The Russians and Chinese probably want us to get stuck so it's not as embarrassing.
We can at least drag china down with us, assuming they built our icebreaker ships. :v:
We can at least drag china down with us, assuming they built our icebreaker ships. :v:
They didn't.
