It was mostly duplicitous on their part. He was arrested for arguing with them, but he received a gag order in court. They later spread rumors on twitter about him being a pedophile, which caused him to argue with them again, breaking the gag order. They later deleted their tweets so that they wouldn't look bad.

I mean I know that's a thing in the UK at least, purely so you can't take someone to court for some retarded reason just to bankrupt them.

Some countries have a system where the loser usually pays the legal fees of the winning party. It's more popular in Europe, but I'm not sure if Canada has a similar system.

Because this was not a civil slander suit, it was a criminal harrassment suit. Criminal code violations are an affront to the crown, and no damages are awarded. He could, and probably will, sue the women now to seek some restitution, especially if they have been spreading lies about him, since that's slander.

Good on the judge.
It's really great that they've failed to wreck him with the law, but they still ruined his life, prison would have just been the finishing move. At least people are helping him out so he isn't financially ruined. But even without financial ruin and imprisonment, this case and the bias reporting by certain media websites has given him a reputation that he doesn't deserve. In that end, these people have achieved their goal.
I'm sure this will be all pinned on the judge.
