Gregory Alan Elliott was cleared of two charges of criminal harassment that stemmed from his Twitter interactions with two Toronto women’s rights activists. Judge Brent Knazan’s lengthy decision dwelled on both the nature of Twitter and freedom of expression. Elliott was cleared, in part, because — though the judge noted his words were sometimes “insulting and homophobic” — his tweets were not considered overtly sexually or physically threatening. Stephanie Guthrie and Heather Reilly accused Elliott of harassment partly based on his use of hashtags — a word, acronym or phrase after a number symbol used to create trackable conversations — they used. It was an assertion the judge found contrary to the open nature of Twitter. He said the pair may have felt harassed, but he couldn’t prove Elliott knew they felt that way, nor did the content of his tweets include explicitly threatening language.
basically guthrie doxxed the person behind the "beat up anita sarkeesian" flash game, gregory disagreed with her tactics, guthrie blocked him, he made a joke about it, she sued him for harassment. she moved goalposts in court for 3 years. Judge finally ruled in gregory's favor. canada is safe from expressing their thoughts of someone on twitter. if you wanna help him, he has a fund up to get his legal fees back https://www.generosity.com/fundraising/gregory-alan-elliott-twitter-trial-support-fund
good
basically guthrie doxxed the person behind the "beat up anita sarkeesian" flash game

They perceive themselves to be an online authority of feminism — they play to a virtual audience and engage in a culture of “calling out,” online mobbing, and doxing. They justify these actions by relying on the moral certainty of their personal cause. Throughout the trial, Blatchford reported on the fact that Guthrie copped to her own bullying tactics. She’s been, arguably, as vindictive online as Elliott himself. It was, after all, with malicious intent that Guthrie sought to “sic the internet” on Spurr, testifying she “would not feel sorry” if his life were ruined, and would feel no sense of responsibility had he been driven to suicide following her call to mob. In her view, he’d have brought it on himself.
http://news.nationalpost.com/full-comment/alheli-picazo-regardless-of-the-verdict-in-the-guthrie-case-weve-already-lost Somewhat distasteful on both sides (the game & the doxxing reaction), but are there any repercussions on Guthrie for doxxing the guy?
lmao they doxxed somebody and then get offended when somebody says mean words about them on twitter? did they even get fucked for doxxing somebody? how is that shit not harassment fucking hypocrites, its why i can never take these people seriously

He was arrested for arguing with them, but he received a gag order in court. They later spread rumors on twitter about him being a pedophile, which caused him to argue with them again, breaking the gag order. They later deleted their tweets so that they wouldn't look bad.
Hooray for setting precidents (hopefully)

Thank god. I heard about this a couple months back and figured this guy was fucked. This marks the first bit of good news I've seen this year, gonna uncork this wine I was going to drink today anyway to celebrate.

I mean I know that's a thing in the UK at least, purely so you can't take someone to court for some retarded reason just to bankrupt them. Seems really stupid that they can basically ruin his life and cause him to have to spend upwards of $40,000 of his retirement money and they just walk away scot free, even after he was declared innocent?

It's more popular in Europe, but I'm not sure if Canada has a similar system.
Didn't this guy get banned off of the internet for three years? I've read about that somewhere.
Some countries have a system where the loser usually pays the legal fees of the winning party.
Didn't this guy get banned off of the internet for three years? I've read about that somewhere.
Yeah
To make matters worse, because his bail conditions prohibited him from using the Internet and computers for the duration of the trial, he was unable to use the tools of his trade and has been unemployable since. Too date, he has paid $50,000 in legal fees, and owes roughly $40,000 more that he is unable to pay at this time.

Yeah
The woman got what she wanted, people she disagreed with to suffer.
Jesus Christ, the Twitter harassment culture is getting out of hand.
It's kind of reminding me of Salem, or at least that play The Crucible. Point at someone you dislike, say they're a [del]witch[/del] harasser, get them banned from the internet for 3 years and nearly 100,000 in legal fees while you continue taunting them.
According to Wikipedia, Canada has this system in place so I don't know why the feminists aren't getting fucked by this.
Because this was not a civil slander suit, it was a criminal harrassment suit. Criminal code violations are an affront to the crown, and no damages are awarded. He could, and probably will, sue the women now to seek some restitution, especially if they have been spreading lies about him, since that's slander.
let the anger flow through you [t]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CZW_0ItXEAEznpc.jpg:orig[/t] also from the court documents
"To subscribe to Twitter and keep your account open is to waive your right to privacy in your tweets. Arranging a meeting or social event using tweets other than direct messages is like inviting strangers into your home or onto your phone line while you talk to your friends. Blocking only goes so far, as long as you choose to remain open."
He didn't make homophobic comments at all: http://www.genuinewitty.com/2016/01/23/court-ruling-makes-serious-mistake-judging-gregory-alan-elliotts-character/
As much as it’s a relief to learn that the accusation was false, it’s equally disturbing to read through media reports accusing Elliott of making homophobic comments. The message went out globally in a report in The Guardian, the CBC mentioned it, VICE did of course, and a host of other publications who’ve mentioned the judge’s statement about homophobic comments.
The power is in the accusation, not the fact. Just make it and you'll have discredited somebody in the eyes of certain peple forever.

It seems clear-cut enough to be forcibly corrected even on the latter in the US.
People like her deserve all the hate they get when resorting to shit like this. These feminazis and their supporters are whiny shits who do fuck all for women's rights and just use it to garnish attention. Want to see a real feminist, one who fights against an actual threat to women's rights? Malala Yousafzai. Not cunts like this bitch, Anita Sarkeedian or Brianna Wu. There are actual problems in terms of gender equality but none of the three I just nentioned do a thing but bitch and moan over the internet whilst doing very little in the way of activism. And whilst I despise that some pricks respond with death/rape threats for exercusing their right to free speech that doesn't mean they should deny their critics those same rights. Good on the judge.
It's really great that they've failed to wreck him with the law, but they still ruined his life, prison would have just been the finishing move. At least people are helping him out so he isn't financially ruined. But even without financial ruin and imprisonment, this case and the bias reporting by certain media websites has given him a reputation that he doesn't deserve. In that end, these people have achieved their goal.
I'm sure this will be all pinned on the judge.
Can someone please post the tweets he got in trouble for, I can't find them.
in the court docs page, search for the words "The Bendilin Spurr Affair" thats where the whole mess began and describes it in detail.
CBC sure likes ethical journalism
