I'm currently using a SyncMaster 940MW and would like to upgrade to something bigger and better. I've been using 16:10 for years and am not sure about switching to 16:9. Is the only benefit to 16:9 more field of view in games and no black bars on videos? If it is I would prefer to stick with 16:10 if possible. I would like the monitor to have a DVI input, a resolution of 1680x1050 or above, glossy screen and good picture quality (obviously). My budget is $250.
Dell U2311H Once you go IPS panel you never go back.
Yeah, Dell makes beastly monitors.
With your budget I recomend the BenQ EW2420, you should be able to find one for $200, as it's £130 or so in the UK. It's not E-IPS, But it uses the next best thing vertical alignment LCD or VA. And it is hard to tell the difference between the much more expensive Dell. Just don't engage the "senseye mode" Screen size:24 Inches Screen tech: VA Contrast ratio: 3000:1 Refresh rate: 8ms Resolution 1920x1080 Inputs: 2xHDMI, DVI, VGA Or you can look at the Prolite E2473HDS by Iiyama, again similar price or VX2453mh by viewsonic that should be a lot cheaper.

Thanks for your replies, but I was really hoping for a 16:10 screen tho. I've come across different types of IPS monitors: IPS, E-IPS and P-IPS, is there much differences between them? I've seen a monitor that I think will suit me, it's the Dell 2209WA, the only problem is that it's $500 new. Is it worth saving up for this monitor? Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions, I know very little about this sort of thing. The only budget 16:10 IPS monitor is the LG W2220P but it's only 1680x1050. It's not that 16:9 is superior to 16:10 but there really are no good low price high quality 16:10 monitors like there are with 16:9. If you can get over yourself and deal with the tiny loss in vertical space just get a U2311H and be happy, it truly is a wonderful monitor at a wonderful price. [editline]13th July 2011[/editline] Also don't worry too much about the specific technology, just as long as it's IPS it's fine.

I've used a friends computer a number of times and I've never gotten used to the 16:9 display, it feels like I'm sitting in front of a TV instead of a computer monitor. If I did get one I would probably never get used to it as I use 16:10 monitors for my other two computers, I would be constantly switching between 16:9 and 16:10. Anyway thanks for mentioning the W2220P, I've seen people from other forums say that it's the direct competitor to the 2209WA. My final choice will probably come down to one of those two if I can get it for a good price.
Dell U2311H Once you go IPS panel you never go back.
Dell has always made great displays. I'm using an old Ultrasharp 1800fp (almost 10 years old) and the display is still excellent. Sure the resolution is pretty low, (1280×1024) but that's more than enough for me and I have no plans to replace it.
What are your opinions on the HP ZR24w? I'm now thinking of saving up for this one instead of the Dell. It's got IPS, 1920x1200 resolution and mostly good reviews online.

I'd save that money and get the U2311H.
I'm using a ViewSonic VX2260WM. 21"5 inch screen, 1920x1080 resolution and I highly recommend it, I use the monitor for my PC and Xbox.

I use the BenQ G2220HD (22''), cost only 120€ and it's a full HD lcd display with a DVI input. It's great for gaming.
TN panel, get out.
Do you realize how fucking annoying you are? Not everyone can afford a fucking legit screen like you. Calm the fuck down and accept that.
Do you realize how fucking annoying you are? Not everyone can afford a fucking legit screen like you. Calm the fuck down and accept that.
As something you'll be using every day, be it for games, movies, image/video editing or just general browsing/usage, you'd think that the quality of the thing that gives you all the visual feedback would be critical and the last place you'd want to skimp on. When IPS monitors are this cheap, the excuse "I can't afford it" is only valid if you're living on canned food with no income. Anybody who doesn't prioritize their monitor and doesn't have the patience to save up for a good one either uses it so sparsely it doesn't matter (in which case he wouldn't be asking for advice) or has his priorities wrong.

Not an IPS. :colbert:
I recently bought a Dell U2711, it displays 2560x1440, fucking godly playing high end games. There's this sort of 'dirty' look to the screen when you look at a white page, but it wont bother you whilst playing games and general browsing. It's around 800 bucks AUD.

If you want something cheaper, look at the Dell U2211H and U2311H. 16:9, unfortunately, but that seems to be the trend for new monitors nowadays. If you prefer 16:10 and can get a 2209WA for the same price as the U2211H/U2311H then go ahead and get that.

I've seen them advertised at the same price and was just wondering if there is any advantage to getting one over the other? What I would be doing most is: Gaming, web browsing and video editing. I've my heart set on 16:10 now so the U2211H and U2311H are out the window. I originally planned to go with the 2209WA but am now hoping to get a 1920x1200 monitor.
The Asus is a newer monitor based on newer technology but that doesn't necessarily mean the quality is better. Both seem to be good screens. The main difference is that the PA246Q has a wide gamut panel but the ZR24w is standard sRGB. This affects the range of colours that can be displayed on the screen. You will have to decide which is better for your use.
