SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES: ANTI-DEPRESSANTS
I'm going to start taking daily doses of Sertraline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sertraline), and I've been doing some research on the medicine. For those who don't know what it is, it's an antidepressant. According to the doctor, I need to take half a pill each day, and I'm more or less scared shitless by the side effects. I'm going to post in this thread about how I feel the first weeks of treatment, and I want you to share your relation with this kind of medicine.
You might feel worse for a while before it starts to pick up again, and don't be too surprised if you need to switch to a different anti-depressant, simply because some work better than others for us. there's no way of determining which is best for you without simply trying them out so keep it at and goodluck.
Also, this might sound like a broken record but it does get better.
As for side effects, they'll either happen or they won't, be aware of them so you know how to respond but otherwise don't worry too much about them.
PM if you need to talk at all.
Good luck. You'll feel better after taking them.
This is kind of off-topic but where I used to live doctors arent too fast on the whole scrip writing. There is a very, very small amount of people who actually use antidepressants (and even fewer reported cases of clinical depression) even if some of them are OTC. I think this has more to do with the culture there than anything else.
I may not be able to understand your situation OP but you hae my support.
I've been on Sertraline for almost six years, and it has treated me well. Just don't try to ween yourself off of it when you know you're gonna be under a lot of stress.
I tried an SSRI for like a week, I reacted to it so badly that my doctor won't try another one. Instead I'm on Welbutrin and Abilify. Welbutrin is pretty okay, it took a while to get the dose correct though - too much and I was jittery all the time, and too little and I was still too depressed.
The Abilify is classified as an anti-psychotic, but I'm on it for depression as well. That was pretty hard to get right. At first the smallest does worked, then the effects wore off. They ended up (after multiple dosage changes) raising the dose to the max, which made me a literal zombie. I couldn't think straight or do anything worth shit. Then they dropped it a tad and it works like a charm.
Moral of the story: Anti-depressants do weird shit, but it's all different weird shit to each person. They take a while to kick in (and to get rid of) and it may take multiple dosage changes or even medication changes before you're stable again, but it is certainly worth it.
I took Celexa for panic disorder and it took about 6 weeks to make any progress, for the first couple weeks I would wake up and feel really bad usually having to lay on the couch for a couple hours before doing anything. Eventually I stopped having panic attacks and I got off the medicine, but I did it cold turkey and SSRI withdrawals are horrible so I wouldn't advise doing that. I wanted to stop being on meds, I barely ever have panic attacks now and before the medicine I was borderline agoraphobic.
I've been on several in my lifetime, at the moment though I'm on a mood stabilizer. It's good to take if you need it, because unlike what some people I know may think, some people honestly have a chemical imbalance. It messes with you, and it's entirely real.
Hope things work out for you.
Haven't used myself, but they're generally good if you have a a chemical imbalance and such but the side effects and especially addiction is pretty bad if you're trying to come off.
My dad had the idea of giving me one for a headache of all things and I got rather dizzy. It kept up and after a while there was a huge blank spot where I was told I went up to bed at seven.
Hell of a night really.
I wouldn't be afraid. I've been on Buproprion, Lamotrigine, Abilify, & Lithium for a year and a half and I've never experienced severe side-effects, as far as I can remember. Except for Abilify they've all had positive effects. Abilify has made me feel supressed which is why I'm about to switch to another medicine.
Weed's prety good.
I took zoloft, setraline, for months. Slowly as it built up in my system I went more and more crazy. Started hallucinating, was paranoid, thought the world was fake, started sending weird messages to people and singing all the time. Weird shit, terrifying, horrible. I ended up in mental hospitals a few times before it was figured out.
Be careful with that stuff and pay close attention to how it's affecting you.
The Combine put stuff in the water that makes you forget.
Forget what?
Your past life, everything before the invasion
Okey..
These pills will stop their effect.
Oh god, what have Half Life 2 RolePlay done to me..
Antidepressants should be used as a last resort. They are known to stunt creativity, and ironically can cause depression. Also included in side effects is something to do with causing heart problems.

I don't see why people can't just ball up and get over their depression without pills to help.
Everyone, thanks for the replies.
I'll begin to use them in the middle of this week; I feel it's necessary to at least try. Wish me luck.
Again, thank you for your replies, and experiences.
The only time I used an antidepressant was when I had to have surgery on my mouth, they gave me this orange liquid called "happy juice" and within seconds I was high as a kite.
Now if only I had some of that to take home.
I've never touched anti-depressants
I take Sertraline too, and it works for me. Sometimes when I forget to take it for a few days I get dizzy, but other than that I'm completely fine.

Depression isn't an emotional state, it's a psychological affliction. Some people are depressed almost to the point of psychosis, they'll literally stay immobile in their beds for MONTHS at a time, putting themselves in danger of starvation and muscular atrophy. Not all depressives are ill to THAT extent, but it doesn't mean they aren't affected by it, they require treatment. It's not like they demand pills, pills are simply what the doctor prescribes. Many choose to pursue professional therapy instead, or alongside medication. Some meds work, some don't. You seem to know something about pharmaceuticals, but you don't seem to know anything about one of the most common psychological disorders in society today.
I won't touch antidepressants, though I've found that adderall-XR seems to treat me very well, my quality of life has improved significantly since I started using it medicinally.
Make sure your medicine works for you, and make sure your doctor and parents know too. I was put on A.D.D. medication (which I still believe was a mistake) and had some bad reactions. Keep an open mind but if something doesn't feel right let people know.
Don't miss a dose when you're taking them. You feel like shit the next day. Other than that, they're pretty awesome.

That could be a lot of things. I hear lots more horror stories about ritalin (Methylphenidate) and vyvance (Lisdexamfetamine) than I do adderall (Amphetamine).

Because sometimes depression is actually a chemical imbalance in the brain.

I was on Ritalin, then concerta, and finally vyvance. Also, I feel like the add thing is used more now a days as an easy way out and given to way more than who needs it. From experience, I can say the South Park episode was pretty dead on. The test you take to see if you have it sucks too. You stare at a square on a computer screen for half an hour and push a button when it flashes... you'd space out too.

SPOILER: It wont do shit for the first week. It takes a few weeks max for you to actually start seeing results as long as you keep taking it. Also don't just stop taking it unless you like withdrawal symptoms and you will crash so fucking hard you will regret it. Also have fun with your dose constantly changing until your doctor gets it right!

Man, you got fucked with the worst of the worst. Hate hearing about those unfortunate enough to constantly be given bad meds.
You're probably right about the ADD thing. It's more of a youth thing I think, parents getting their children prescribed to dumb bullshit like ritalin because he can't sit still. He's a fucking kid, OF COURSE he's going to fidget.

Because PTSD and psychological trauma is a real condition and "just getting over it" does not work.
I need EMDR to get over some of my PTSD. That shit isnt cheap and finding someone with a good enough success rate is almost impossible in my area.

You should look into psychedelic psychotherapy. I hear the success rate of that type of treatment is actually quite surprising.

So basically your saying I should get fucking high to get over my PTSD?
