WASHINGTON (AP) — Capitol Police were not amused by tweets and an article written by the satirical newspaper The Onion falsely reporting that members of Congress had taken a group of schoolchildren hostage.
The satirical newspaper's Twitter accounts and related story Thursday reporting gunshots and hostage-taking in the Capitol came a day after the FBI arrested a Massachusetts man accused of planning to bomb the Pentagon and the Capitol with explosive-filled model airplanes.
"It has come to our attention that recent twitter feeds are reporting false information concerning current conditions at the U.S. Capitol," Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said in a statement.
She said conditions at the Capitol, now largely empty because lawmakers are on vacation, were normal. "There is no credibility to these stories or the twitter feeds. The U.S. Capitol Police are currently investigating the reporting."
The Onion tweets and article spoke of members congressional leaders, "brandishing shotguns and semiautomatic pistols," taking a class of schoolchildren hostage and threatening to kill them if they didn't get $12 trillion in cash.
It showed a doctored picture of House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, holding a gun to a child's head and reported that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was firing a handgun and wearing a black pantyhose over his head.
Boehner's office had no comment.
I get that they're supposed to take these things seriously, but really?
The Capitol Police must really have nothing to do, since they have to sit and care about something like this. I thought there was real crimes to fight and stuff? No?
12 trillion in cash? What? Where the fuck would they get a hold of such a large sum, yet still pay it for a school class? I just don't.. though, I can understand that the police doesn't take it particularly lightly.
The U.S. Capitol Police are currently investigating the reporting.
Nothing better come of this "investigation".
That is not something the government should be doing.
Too bad Capitol Police because i find the onion hilarious then again i've got the common sense to see they're being satirical.

It's probably two guys sitting in the office laughing their ass off.
Best weekend job ever.

INVESTIGATION ON PARODIES OH YEAAAH.
INVESTIGATION ON PARODIES OH YEAAAH.
It could be worse. Their office could be in siege right now.
And now they are going to wait at the Onion Office and then pull them over and tell everyone they threatened to kill them so now they get a prison sentence.
no guys dont worry the us government will arrest the onion to protect our freedom

the gullibility...
it's coming from inside the thread
I get that they're supposed to take these things seriously, but really?
The Onion is the most famous satirical "news" organization in the country(hell, possibly the world). The fact they didn't google The Onion or even look at other news stories on their website shows that they aren't taking this shit seriously.

Obviously, if a newspaper reports on something quite as serious, something that could potentially harm the reputation amongst the people, irregardless of how stupid of a claim it is, by a newspaper nonetheless, and as far as I call, shitting on other peoples name weren't covered by free speech, I could definitely understand why they'd take it seriously, if not only for that reason. Though, should any conviction come out of it, I would be quite surprised.
Though, Andokool12, is that your age? and Cccritical, why don't you post in the thread and tell me what exactly you disagree with? Instead of just dumping a rating on me.

It's not a "newspaper". It's "news satire".
and as far as I call, shitting on other peoples name weren't covered by free speech,
Yes it is, if it's satirical. Satire is protected as long as it's obviously satirical.

I'm amazed that an o5er is saying that shit
wow
and btw if you actually take the onion seriously, your a fool
It's not a "newspaper". It's "news satire".
Still, I'd assume if you are within law enforcement you would have to take into consideration, those citizens who are of less than average IQ, who could potentially take this seriously as it appears to be a newspaper, regardless of its satire or not, and that is just scraping the surface.
Yes it is, if it's satirical. Satire is protected as long as it's obviously satirical.
Oh? Well then.. the part I mentioned above still applies, should you be working law enforcement, i'd assume.

Just curious as why they can't show up and post their own meaning, instead of just rating me dumb and disagree. Though, I guess some people can't hold their own weight in a debate, so, sure, if they don't want to, that's fine with me. And I was merely curious as to what the number in his name meant, as most people who are born in a certain year or is of a certain age puts that in their name, i.e. 91, 92, 93 or 13, 14, 15 etc etc.

anyone who takes it seriously probably isn't smart enough to do anything about it and obviously not smart enough to notice it isn't on ANY other news station and NO ONE is talking about it seriously
people taking it actually serious is almost moot

Disagree and dumb is there so they don't have to post just "I disagree", and I've only see people care when they're butthurt about it
think of it as a short answer, you should know this being an o5'er
and who cares what the number is about? its a number

These articles are obviously satirical.
Here's a few headlines:
"Longtime Coffee Shop Employee Thought Customers Would Care More About His Last Day"
"U.N. Address Ends In Tragedy As Ahmadinejad Suffers Third Degree Burns From Malfunctioning Pyrotechnics"
"Obama Visits South-Carolina-Ravaged South Carolina"
"Obama Earns Money For U.S. By Appearing In Japanese Television Commercial"
Anyone who doesn't immediately recognize this as satire deserves to be panicked.

Obviously, I do agree with you that I do find it quite dumb that they would choose to investigate it, though, for any ridiculous claim made by newspapers, that later turn out to have cops/FBI/CIA etc involved in them, I always assume it is due to the low intelligence amongst certain people, so that they do not mistake something for being serious. You also have to take into account the mob mentality, which can quickly involve into something big.

Well, seeing as how America has had a few people believing Obama is the doomsday in human form, I would not be too surprised if people believe such, more easy to believe headlines, in contrast to Obama being the doomsday coming.

You're seriously stretching the government's scope of power if you think they should base their powers around how retards interpret things.

most people don't genuinely believe that, they just hate him so much they make wild claims
You're seriously stretching the government's scope of power if you think they should base their powers around how retards interpret things.
Well, obviously, if their jurisdiction does not include this; which it very well can, depending on how you interpret the law and so on, Should there be any evidence the government or the police or any other security branch is breaking their limits and/or the law regarding such issues, I would have a problem with their legitimate claim to investigate this. So far, though, I haven't seen anything that says the contrary.
most people don't genuinely believe that, they just hate him so much they make wild claims
Indeed, and because you have people saying "Well, dangit son, you know what I just heard? Dem congress just holed up some of our kids as hostages, dem communists/nazists/whateverists, we oughta just drive up 'er and shoot 'em all" I assume you quickly realize the problem with such claims? When they have followers who absolutely hate the government, who hate congress, who hate Obama.

do you think the government should investigate Colbert as well?
i mean he's on the talky box and everythin

I, personally, have never listened to Colbert. Though, should he present extreme right or left wing views, I would not be too surprised if the security branch of the government has him under some kind of watch. As as far as I can recall, the Freedom of Speech only includes such speeches that does not incite hate; should his speech do so, I would not be surprised if he is being watch, indeed. However, the security branch of the government, nor the government itself, should never have the power to shut down or limit a individual; radio; tv channel; news paper to stop say what he/she/it/they wishes to.

Hello Trainbike, don't want to post in the thread and actually have a discussion? That's fine with me, bro.
