is there a way to make linux boot without looking for drives to mount?

my friend is repairing his roommates laptop (dell inspiron 9300), and it won't boot into windows. so he made a livecd of mint so he can back up files. when he tries to boot from it, during the boot process he gets an error "attatched scsi generic sg2 type 0"
he believes the error is related to mounting the drive.
if anyone can help fix the error/answer the question, that would be great.

the usb device is his usb stick he's using to boot into linux
also, apparently he just needs to get to a command prompt and run a fsck on the harddrive if possible.
He is at a command prompt. BusyBox is running. The (initramfs) is the prompt.
yeah, it's working, you should be able to use fsck from there, try typing
start x
that might get you to a gui
also, don't worry about that last bit, it's not an error.
ok, thanks, i'll show him this next time i talk to him.

That's not an error, just an informational message from a driver. I don't see any error messages on that screen, in fact.
ok now he says he tried to run X, it wouldn't load.
and fsck was not recognized as a command.
Sounds like he didn't get everything on the USB correctly.
hmm yeah, birkett would know what to do from here...
He probably didn't get everything on as buttsex said.
tell him to:
cd /
ls
From the look of the prompt he's only half way through the boot process and it's stopped at the initial ramdisk, so there probably are not many binary programs he can actually use for anything he wants to do.
Correct me if I'm wrong
i'll show him this next time i talk with him.
