Advertising Standards launches investigation into No Man's Sky
The Advertising Standards Authority has confirmed to Eurogamer that it has launched an investigation into No Man's Sky.
The watchdog launched its investigation after receiving "several complaints" about No Man's Sky advertising, a representative told me.
The ASA has the power to have advertisements it believes are in breach of its code of conduct withdrawn, and prevent them from appearing again. If an advertiser refuses to comply with an ASA ruling, it can impose sanctions, such as asking internet search websites to remove a marketer's paid-for search ads.
Can't help but think they brought this on themselves- as much as you could argue Sony had a hand in false advertising, Hello Games still used a 2 year old bullshot video and screenshots from said video as their current Steam store page, and that would all be on them. Add to the fact that they've said very little post-release, and I can't help but feel the ASA has some leverage here.
Huh. I was wondering when this was going to happen.

Hasn't been on social media since. I personally think they should have pushed back the release date and not be so zealous about getting the game out on time after they lost everything in the flood.
I honestly cant blame sony based off of what I've heard
Sony came out and made a statement saying that there were missteps in the way the PR was handled, for sure, but the wording made it seem like there was a push from Sony to give Hello Games a PR consultant and they either refused or just never utilized it well.
Seems like Sean Murray thought he could handle everything and it very clearly wasnt the case

The game was delayed repeatedly, including a last-minute six-week delay with no explanation.
I really hope this case leads to this not becoming a common practice. There's enough disgusting marketing tactics in play in the games industry. We don't need false advertisement and false expectations to build false hype and then rake in cash with lies.

Aliens: Colonial Marines came out three and a half years ago. I'm not getting my hopes up about industry changes as a result of this latest example of false advertising.

It's an indie studio, and not a big studio.
They're going to get thrown under the bus.

Wasn't that studio sued over that game because they misappropriated funding?

Yeah, they took SEGA's money for Colonial Marines but used it a lot of it for Borderlines instead.

Hint: Gearbox.

You're totally right, waiting a few months to get a good game is a retarded idea. They should just release it as soon as possible so the games goes dormant after 3 weeks - oh wait

If they weren't so fucking sketchy about literally everything I'd feel bad about them being in this mess
But I don't
They some how managed to be vague and over promise at the same time

I own the game, I'm rather disappointed that I paid $60 for about $20 worth of game, and I would've been quite happy with six months more delays if the end result was the game they promised.
I'm just saying, it'd already been pushed back several times as-is. The poster I was replying to was acting like they slammed it together as fast as they could after the flood when that's very much not the case.

They could've fooled me.
Hopefully I can get my money back from this. I tried so hard to be positive about this game, but the charm wore off way too fast.

The head of Sony (the global parent of the Sony division handling PS4) kind of already threw Hello Games under the bus.

I don't think they really had a choice. I would guess that Sony pressured them into getting it out on time, and they likely had to cut a bunch of stuff to get the game into a mostly working state.
There's no way to know for sure, but that seems likely.
They definitely need to change the screenshots and videos on steam, though. They are very different from what the released game actually is.

It's funny because literally 1% of that user base is what's actually playing right now on steam

ASA are in the UK so I wouldn't think so

Good luck, the FTC protects companies not us.
god damn, the colossal disaster that is this game just doesn't seem to be coming to an end.
all im left wondering is why there was false advertisements in the first place. it seemed clear to anyone that everything sean was promising wouldn't make it into the game, so why would sean say so? this isn't even a he-said-she-said case where you could argue some information got miscommunicated down the line.
sean himself appeared on numerous videos promising features that not only weren't there, but seemingly were never intended to be there.
This just keeps going lower into the ground.
