So Facepunch, in the next couple of weeks, I will be upgrading my current computer.
Current specs:
CPU: AMD Anthlon II x2 250 @ 3.525 GHZ
RAM: 4GB DDR2 800
Motherboard: ASRock K10N78M Micro ATX motherboard AM3/AM2+/AM2
GPU: Sapphire 1GB HD 5770
HDD: Western Digital 500GB 7200rpm
PSU: Cooler Master 550W (2 6+2 pins)
Case: Antec 200
So I have been looking at 2 possible upgrades.
The first one is an i5 upgrade.

The second is a Phenom II and a GPU upgrade.

So I have three main questions.
1. Can my case handle and fit the new parts fine? (Especially the CPU coolers)
2. Can my PSU handle the new parts fine?
3. Which upgrade should I choose?
Side notes:
This computer is mainly used for gaming, maybe some light video editing.
My monitor's resolution is 1920x1080.
I am looking into overclocking; I would like to clock either CPUs up to at least 3.6 GHz, if not more.
I live in the United States.
I absolutely have NO preference in terms of brands, I'm fine with either AMD/Intel, nVidia/ATI, etc...
I would like to stay under $500, I would say that $550 is MAXIMUM.
I am looking to get the best possible performance out of this computer.
If someone has better suggestions for parts, I would like to hear it.
If you need any more information, please ask.
I like the AMD setup better because it comes with a GTX 470. I vote that one.
Get the first one. Save up some more money and buy a second 5770.
What are you doing with that CPU cooler? Buy an S1283 for $35 on Amazon. It's definitely better than that overpriced junk.
The second upgrade is much better, for gaming, the Phenom II's are great, even if they're not quite as fast as an i5, they're close enough. Plus you don't have to change your motherboard or ram, You might consider going for a Phenom II 955 Black Edition, they're binned higher then that 940 and may overclock better. And for the cooler I recommend the Cooler Master Hyper 212 +:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065&Tpk=hyper%20212%20plus
It cools like a monster for its price.
Plus for future games at your resolution, that GTX 470 will cut through them like a hot knife through butter. It's a good GPU upgrade for the money.
And go with the first one.
And go with the first one.
Why replace your ram and motherboard when you can put that money to a gpu upgrade that actually impacts performance to a large degree. The 2nd is a much better use of his money.

What's the point when his terrible CPU is just going to bottleneck the shit out of it?

You're saying that a 3.0 Ghz Phenom II quad core is a terrible CPU?
What are you, an Intel fanboy?

Oops, didn't realize.

Maybe you should look at the two lists before posting.
Ok, so you are mostly saying 2nd one, but get a the 212+?
Would the case/PSU handle the parts fine?
550W is enough for even very high-end machines. You will do fine.

Uh, fuck off.

No do not get the 212, period. It's terrible for the money, especially considering a Megahalems is only $3 more.

That was unnecessarily negative? :raise:
Anyways, what CPU cooler would you suggest?
I need a small, and efficient heatsink that can give me some room for overclocking.
Yes, I did look up the S1283, and it seems that it is too large for me, and some reviews say that it is hard to install in AM2+/AM3 sockets.
EDIT:
When I do get the upgrade, I'll probably sell the 5770.
How much is an used 5770 worth nowadays?
Get a second 5770, and OC them both, I hear its an amazing combo.

470:
1920x1080 x0 AA

2 5770's OC'd.

The 2 5770's OC'd beats the 470 even when its on 4xAA and the 470 is on 0.
Yes the 470 benchmark was taken before the new drivers were released, but ATI had new drivers to, and keep in mind if you set the AA to be the same, the 2 OC'd 5770's still would have most likely come out on top.

Yes, I have considered that, but from past experiences with SLi, I had a lot of trouble with inconsistent framerates, and I would like to stay away from multi-GPU solutions, unless it's not an issue anymore.
Why are you getting an H55 board?
Get a P55 one
550W is enough for even very high-end machines. You will do fine.
Yeah, unless you're using dual 5870s on it, then you'll be fine with 550W.
get this mobo for the first one instead
