• Can't get computer to boot from cd

I have an older, unused computer that was laying around, so I decided to hook it up to my TV and use it for multimedia. The current windows installation is so infested with viruses I don't even want to deal with it. So I want to try out Linux on it. I downloaded the latest version of Ubuntu, and burned the ISO to a CD-R (I figure a disc format is the culprit) using Alcohol 120. So I boot up the computer and go into the BIOS, change the boot order so that CD-ROM is first, then save and exit. Put in the CD and reboot. No matter how I do it, it wont read the disc. I even set the BIOS to only boot from a CD and then when I turn on the computer it just says "No OS Found" Anyone know the problem? I don't really understand all the disc formats or which one exactly mine is. It just has the DVD Multi-Layer and Compact Disc ReWriteable symbols on the drive.
Try putting it on a flash drive with unetbootin instead.
Well, I didn't want to go digging for a flash drive but i'll try it out. Should be done soon. [editline]03:50PM[/editline] Ok, finally got it. Had a little hiccup with the usb boot order, contrary to what I thought, it was recognized as "Hard Drive 1", not "Removable" [editline]03:51PM[/editline] Haha! Posting from the live linux right now. Makes this computer run fast as hell.
Good to hear. I've noticed that unetbootin doesn't always provide up-to-date distros, for your information.
It has the latest Ubuntu's, it is pretty bad about keeping other distros up to date, though.
You can have unetbootin use ISO's that it does not come with. All you have to do is specify the image in the GUI.
