• Found an old bitcoin wallet on one of my old HDDs - what software should I use?

Many year back when I first heard of Bitcoin I decided to give the mining program a go and made a few coins. As the coins were basically worthless at the time I quickly gave up and moved on. Now the prices are ridiculous I went ahead and started looking for my old wallet in the dozen or so old HDDs I have lying around and I think I may have found my old wallet. The wallet was last modified in June of 2011 so I'm reasonably confident it's the right one. I downloaded Bitcoin Core but it wants to download several hundred gigabytes of transaction history. Is there any other software I can use that doesn't need the transaction history? If there are coins in this wallet I want to convert them into cash asap before the market collapses.
Hey it's me your brother. I forgot to log out of my email. Send me your IP. So I can RDP in. [sp]Wow hundreds of gigs for transactions[/sp]
Electrum is telling me it's not a private key. Keep looking I guess.
You'd probably be better off downloading the history, assuming you got a lot of bitcoins. Congratulations to you if you struck it rich! [sp]Rip small dumbass me who sold all of his 3.41 BTC for only 60 bucks[/sp]
Okay, no luck so far. Found two bitcoin addresses, I'm hoping I didn't fuck up all those years ago and stash the address instead of the private key. I have a few more drives lying about I'll dig out of the shed tomorrow morning.
I just read about it yesterday. As far as I know, you only have to update the blockchain to 2011, unless somebody has paid you after that too. That means, you only have to download like 5GB.
Oh boy, this just reminded me to check if I have any old wallets laying around. I remember when I used to mine on slushpool and I had at least half a bitcoin but I can't remember the username or password.
