Torch-wielding white supremacists rallied around a Robert E. Lee statue slated for removal Saturday night in Virginia and chanted “Russia is our friend."
The group surrounding the Confederate statue in Charlottesville’s Lee Park extinguished their torches just before 9:30 p.m. and left as cops swarmed the street, according to the Daily Progress newspaper.
It was not immediately clear which group was behind the unsettling stunt but right-wing extremist Richard Spencer claimed to be among the torchbearers after protesting at a similar rally in Jackson Park hours earlier.
The 39-year-old right-wing radical tweeted a photo of himself brandishing a torch during the rally. Charlottesville is home to Spencer’s alma mater, the University of Virginia.
“This event involving torches at night in Lee Park was either profoundly ignorant or was designed to instill fear in our minority populations in a way that hearkens back to the days of the KKK,” Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer said in a statement.
If you told me a year ago we'd be seeing shit like this I'd have laughed in your face. Goddamn it's more and more enraging and embarrassing to be American every day.
Also fuck those cunts.
Ok, lets run with the, very stupid, assumption that what they are saying totally has merit. That doesn't explain why it is being brought up at a rally to prevent a statue of a civil war general from being removed. How are they remotely connected?
I think it's understandable to not want the statue removed but "Russia is our friend" what the fuck

Anything to be against 'the other side' seems to be the way of the current political climate.
Let's be honest, Russia is only our friend to these guys because they (very probably) helped them get their shining golden toilet into the Oval office

A year ago Russia was the enemy
We will only see more brazen displays like this as the narrativists undergo more extreme compaction cycles. Mark my words, we will see an increase in violence among right wing militias.

Good. Then there's a fantastic excuse to rid the world of the perpetrators.
Let them try.
To hold views as they do is bad enough. To actually act on those views and attempt to hurt other people means they need to be crushed and ground underfoot like the insects they are.
This goes for the violent extremists in both the regressive left and the far right. Their rights end where the rights of others begin - and their beliefs, unsupported by science and any measure of common sense, are harmful to the species as a whole. If they would use violence to achieve their ends, remove them.
