• ad-hoc networks in Android 2.2

Hello, So I wanted to find a way to make it possible to connect to an ad-hoc network from an Android 2.2 phone (HTC Wildfire) I have found out a couple of ways of doing so by searching Google, but I'd like to know what you on FacePunch think as well before proceeding to whatever I'll need to do. So, what do you say?
I did something like this for my SSGTab: 1. Root and turn off wifi 2. Download WPA_supplicant or something 3. Replace the old one with it 4. Turn on wifi and connect to ad-hoc Sadly, I can't do it anymore since the latest firmware can't be rooted easily via z4root.
I am not sure if I should root my phone, I've been searching about rooting Wildfire and many say it doesn't yet work. In some cases people say it fucks the phone up.

1) Root Phone 2) Install "wifi tether for root users" from market 3) Tether
Are their any tethering options for non-root users?

My phone gets a more reliable internet connection than the cable line to my house so in certain situations this could be a life-saver.
