• BP lowers a cap onto leaking Gulf of Mexico oil well
Oil firm BP has lowered a cap onto a leaking oil well in the Gulf of Mexico, in the hope of piping some of the oil to ships on the surface. Video footage showed the cap lowered into place against pressure from escaping oil and gas. It could be 24 hours before it is clear whether the move has worked. The US Coast Guard said the cap would only be a temporary, partial fix.
UPDATE
A new cap placed over a ruptured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico has begun to funnel oil to the surface. US Coast Guard chief Adm Thad Allen said rough estimates showed that 1,000 barrels a day were being captured. This is only a small part of the 12,000-19,000 barrels a day believed to be leaking and BP says it could take 48 hours to know if the system is working. BP says it has spent more than $1bn so far. President Barack Obama is to visit the affected area again on Friday. The plan is to lower a cap onto the upper section of the blowout preventer known as the lower marine riser package (LMRP).

The damaged riser - the pipe which takes oil from the well - was cut where it nears the seabed using a remotely-operated shear. This was completed at 1930 CDT on 1 June (0030 GMT 2 June).

The next stage was for a diamond wire cutter to saw through the riser close to the LMRP. The blade got stuck and had to be removed but BP eventually cut through the pipe using giant shears manipulated by undersea robots (ROV).

After removing the pipe, the next stage is for a cap to be lowered onto the LMRP, forming a tight seal. Lines containing methanol stop hydrates forming which could block the oil flowing up to the drill ship. This'll be fucking hilarious if it fails. I need more boxes I want to make a box transformer suit.
This'll be fucking hilarious if it fails.
At the expense of everything in the area, yes.
Only thing I care about really is the sperm whales, those fuckers are too cool to die.
They need to just stop trying to save the oil and block the damn leak already
I don't get why they don't just get so much concrete that they build a damn island on top of the thing. I guess this is why I'm not an engineer.
I don't get why they don't just get so much concrete that they build a damn island on top of the thing. I guess this is why I'm not an engineer.
It's pressurized; a mile under the ocean, and you want to pour concrete on it!? This is why you're still in high school.

So how long before the guy running BP kills himself?
So how long before the guy running BP kills himself?
I don't think Satan can kill himself.
So how long before the guy running BP kills himself?
I give him 2 more days
I don't think Satan can kill himself.
Wow ain't that rich. He doesn't have much to do with what the engineers think of, and he's just a pawn in a fatally flawed system.
This'll be fucking hilarious if it fails.
We need an "asshole" rating. It's fine just give me boxes, I fancy making a fort anyway :buddy:
This'll be fucking hilarious if it fails.
Internet tough guy.
Internet tough guy.
No, that would be if someone was saying that he could beat someone up, or otherwise hurt him, even though in real life he could probably not. What he's doing is either trolling (trying to get angry, serious responses from people), or he's just expressing his opinion on the matter (most likely).
Internet tough guy.
...really? I'm not threatening to tear out any ones ovaries or declaring I'm king of the world. I'm just laughing cause of how ridiculous the whole situation is.
I don't get why they don't just get so much concrete that they build a damn island on top of the thing. I guess this is why I'm not an engineer.
It's a mile under water... That's 2,000 pounds of pressure per square inch I believe... and the Oil is gushing out like it is? That is a LOT of force
Why didnt they do this in the first place?
At the expense of everything in the area, yes.
Wow, like you genuinely care? You're one of those people who can't have a laugh of spite, because you think it's not right. Not that you actually care about the marshes and coastlines, you just want to be better than the guy who laughs at BP's expense.
Very much relevant:
They need to just stop trying to save the oil and block the damn leak already
Go outside and turn on your water hose. Place your hand over the hose and make sure NO water leaks out not a drop. When that doesn't work, put the end of the hose in a watering can. You tell me which one worked. Blocking the flow off, or "saving" the water.

Right now they are attempting to seal off the vents on the cap. We should know if it worked later on today. CNN has a real cool live video feed of them fixing it.

BP's feed is dead?

It said on the bottom that they put the cap on, but it's still leaking? Failed?
