Hey guys need a little advice, last night I was playing a few games of dota with a friend and I somehow managed to knock a beer can off my desk and onto the top of my PC. Some beer my have managed to get through the vents in the top of the case and it instantly switched of, at that point I'd already drank quite alot so I went to bed deciding it was broken. Woke up this morning and booted it up, got a very strange sound and the keyboard wouldn't work for the first few attempts although I was able to get into windows. It finally decided to work and I got in thinking that everything was fine, booted up dota 2 played about half a game and it turned itself off again with the smell of burning beer coming from the vents. I took the graphics card out and gave it a dab with some water because that was the logical place the beer would have fallen and it did seem sticky. Now it failed to display anything atall so I left it for a few hours and now it seems to be working fine? Is there anything more I can do, or will these short outs continue because of the beer damage?
Thanks for any replies
There really isn't much you can do at this point. They may get more frequent or it may be fine.
If you want to get really paranoid, you could try scrubbing it up with a Q-tip or something.
I guess the lesson here is, keep liquids away from your PC.
Hey guys I need a little advice as well. Last night I was outside playing a game of baseball with some friends and I somehow managed to trip into a hole and fracture my shinbone. Nothing was sticking out but I noticed a small lump on the side of my leg. At this point I wasn't in thát much pain so I went to bed deciding it was broken. Woke up this morning and had a walk, got a very strange feeling in my leg and I sometimes almost collapsed, but I was able to walk downstairs. My leg finally decided to stop hurting and I thought everything was fine, I put on my running shoes and had a run for half an hour until my entire leg broke off and my bone started sticking out. I took out some bandaids and cleaned the wound since that was the logical place the bone stuck out from and it did seem kinda rough. Now I can't walk anymore at all so I lied there for a few hours and now I seem to be limping fine? Is there anything more I can do, or will my leg continue to limp because of the broken bone damage?

I'd dismantle your entire PC (mobo and cards, not the case and drives) and rinse it under hot water, then leave it for a few days near a vent/register/fan to dry before reassembling.
Also, make sure the machine at least boots before you start tearing it apart, that way you know if it stops working it's because you fucked something up.
The fact that it actually POSTed TWICE after playing dead is still a good sign your hardware is not fatally damaged.
Alot of effort went into making a snarky comment 10/10

Just putting it in perspective buddy!
as the keyboard is obviously not getting enough power, i'd recommend popping the power supply open; it's the only way to flip the circuits and figure out the correct voltage each usb port is getting. don't shut the pc off, you can't test the voltage inside the psu if it's off. besides that, don't pour any more liquids down your computer and you should be fine.

yeah, I would try this, open it up and check the capacitors and make sure they're functioning and haven't blown up, if they're blown up your only bet is to replace them. if you replace them while the psu is on you can make sure they're functioning and you have the right type

And making yourself look like an ass in the process
Ok thanks alot for all the replies, yea I'll try not to throw any more alcohol over it! I'm gunna crack open the PSU now and take a look, was worried it was the port because it would of been the part of the motherboard the beer would of hit because the PS/2 slot is located at the top.

If your not going to help the guy, don't shitpost.
Pentium's Idea is the best OP, best of luck
You can also wash your power supply. Yes it sounds insane but 99% of electronics do not instantly explode when washed. Just make sure you let them completely dry before applying power again or else they WILL instantly explode.
dont open the psu up
It's far safer to just buy a new PSU then to crack it open and start tinkering around inside it.

Don't open up a PSU unless you really know what you're doing or you could be seriously injured or even killed.

it's also far safer to never leave your house, but what fun would that be?

OP: Do not open up the PSU. Especially not when its running.
Even if it has been off for a long time, the capacitors in a crappy psu can still hold enough charge to zap you good.

Dude fuck off. Dont joke about this shit.
Get some pure rubbing alcohol and mix it 50/50 with water and go over spills with some q-tips, clean the power supply in particular but don't shove your fingers in it just in case there is any charge remaining (highly unlikely but it doesn't hurt to play it safe, if you do need to grab it use one hand only and keep the other in your pocket), it should of course be unplugged before doing anything, I would not wash it fully as pentium / mips suggested since it can take a significant time to fully dry if waster gets down in the coils or transformer.
Your PC is wet/damp, stop turning it on. Let it dry out completely and it should probably work fine.
I doubt dried up beer would conduct any electricity(as long as you actually let it dry out long enough)
it's also far safer to never leave your house, but what fun would that be?
When it comes to people who are less tech literate, don't joke about life threatening shit please.
Never open a PSU off or on if you are not familiar with what you are doing.

Just a note;
If you do decide to open it;
Unplug the power cord, leave the PSU switch on, and click the computers power button.
The computer should power on for a brief moment, discharging the capacitors.
I always do that before opening a PSU, and it seems to do a good job discharging capacitors.

Does it discharge completely upon just a click, or do you have to push in for 10 seconds? I've read both online and I'm not sure which one is more accurate.

So what you're saying is that he should take it to the computer hospital
which is dumb when you can fix it yourself cheaper
This may sound dumb but what if I want to wash my motherboard?
Can I disconnect it from mains, take CPU and components off and just dip it into bath of water then leave to dry for few days? I mean as long as it's not plugged in and dries out later - no harm done?
Genuine question.
Don't even joke about opening a PSU ff's
I once had a customer who had the lid off and tried poking around inside one with a screwdriver (while the PC was on as well) and was suprised he prodded something carrying mains electricity and it went bang. I'm amazed he didn't kill himself.
I wish i was making this up, don't underestimate people's stupidity.

So long as you wash the cleaner off and dry it off properly, you should be fine.
The charged capacitor of the PSU can kill you even when it's off don't do that shit.

Couldn't you use isopropyl alcohol for a better wash without any left-over mineral deposits as you'd get with water? Or would that react weirdly with the beer?
It's just that mineral deposits that bridge pins or circuit tracks can cause issues if they're conductive

I've done that before in an extreme case of dust. Just make sure everything is dry. I like to use a hair dryer after toweling the pieces off in every angle possible, and then leave it out. If you do that though, make sure it's on a low heat setting so you don't potentially mess up anything. I melted some keyboard plastic that way before and it wasn't fun trying to use that keyboard after that mishap.

Do not do this
Doing it while it's on is ridiculously stupid
Even doing it while it's turned off if you don't know exactly what you're doing can be very dangerous - there are capacitors in there storing a bunch of power and just looking for a misplaced finger to send a fuckload of electricity into

Using a hair dryer is likely to push the moisure further into the boards/components, which isn't a good idea. If you can make sure no rice dust gets onto the motherboard, you can put it in a black bag with some rice and leave it in a warm place. The rice absorbs moisture from the air around it. In any case you'll want to leave it for as long as possible before using it again
Edit: or at least that's how I did it when I had to wash out my LCD monitor. I'm not sure if the rice is standard practice or not.
