Title of Knight or Dame to be reintroduced in Australia
Retiring Governor-General Quentin Bryce has become a dame and her successor Peter Cosgrove will become a knight, after Prime Minister Tony Abbott restored the system of pre-eminent honours.
The Queen has amended the letters patent for the Order of Australia to allow for the new honours, Mr Abbott said on Tuesday.
The honours category, which was removed in 1986 after only 10 years of operation, will recognise pre-eminent Australians and up to four knights or dames can be appointed each year.
Mr Abbott, a former director of Australians for a Constitutional Monarchy, defended the decision, saying it would enhance the dignity of the existing system.
Australian Greens leader Christine Milne said Australia had gone socially backwards under Mr Abbott's government.
"Bring on a republic," she said.
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten didn't have much to add.
"It's good to see the government has a plan for Knights and Dames - where's their plan for jobs?" he said in a statement.
Don't worry, Abbott's got the important stuff on his mind guys.
Abbott's decision as summed up in a nutshell:

Meh, can't really complain about this one. I'm hoping we at least get Sir Geoffrey Rush from it.
So what are the odds of him bringing this back just because the governor general said Australia should be a republic? I'm guessing pretty damn high.

Abbott is a staunch Monarchist.
Who cares really. Titles are such a non-issue.
Sir Tone Abett, pls no

Even so, the support for becoming a republic is low

Which is funny because we pretty much already are, apart from some small left overs (The governor general being one, partly) we're entirely self governed.
Edit: The act that made us independent was also the one that removed these titles, even with them being re-introduced they have nothing to do with the UK variants.
Let's become a republic and have our own titles "Old Mate and Sheila"
Being a knight would totally suck, nobody would want to do it
You have to pay for your own set of armor, have to hire a squire and/or train armigers, then there's all the drudgery of having to quell peasant uprisings and butcher bandits that threaten your fief and tenants, and I hear the work is really dangerous and has pretty shitty pay for the work involved
Elton John quit after some mong shot him through his iron greaves with a crossbow bolt
Abbott better not get a title. Still, Cosgrove is a good choice for Governor
I love how Quentin Bryce backed the republic movement in Australia, then accepts to being made a Dame. She has her head way too far up her own arse about public image than to care about being a hypocrite.
Still don't get what the point of this is, other than having a couple of people each year that can wave their dicks around for being a dame/knight.
Yeah Quentin Bryce really flunked this one, but I have a feeling her impending retirement might have clouded her judgement.
Also the republican they just interviewed on 7:30 was incredibly angry at the whole thing, very eloquent guy though.
gotta go to australia and slay a dragon
i'm sure one is there somewhere

Canada and NZ are also pretty much self-governed as well, we closed all UK interference in the Australia act and so did the others, mind you we are pretty much the UK if it was big and a bit stupid

Tho I gotta say the UK is stupid as well

Should change it to Bush Master or something. Knights in Australia.. does not sound right.
So that is why I felt weird last night, we were going back in time.
In all seriousness, is Tony even taking his job seriously?
I want to be a Knight. That would be so bad ass. I even have a sword!
I want to be a Dame :C.
so first we get the anti-discrimination laws rolled back so abusing someone on the basis of race isn't illegal, and then we get knights and dames
i think abbott is trying to set australia as far back as possible, pretty soon we'll have carts of dung being pulled on every street and people trying to light fire with rocks
I am Sir Sir "Sirly" Sirson jr., son of Sir Sir sr., Sir of the Sirs.
I want to be a dame
