Open command prompt and type "sfc /scannow" without quotation marks. That should fix any broken Windows files
Safemode - MBAM.
MSE is not even that useful when you already have avast! . Keep using avast, when your MSE is broken.

I can probably live without MSE, but what about the 'self-sorting' icons?

Anybody?
Did you try what I said?

Yeah, nothing appeared to need to be fixed.
Any ideas?
From what I have read, the trojan is possibly a rootkit and could have also installed other things onto your computer (most likely adware)
You either should do a much deeper scan with another antivirus or format.
Use eset's free trial for now to make sure everything is clean. But do the scan in safe mode.

[del]I tried installing it and a window stated that Norton Internet Security was installed.
I ran the Symantec cleanup tool, but it didn't work.
Something tells me that's what's jamming my desktop icons up and not letting me install MSE.[/del]
Nope. It was just a random registry key.
I'll try scanning now.
even if norton is complete shit at antivirus, they are not that stupid to do that. It is something else, did you run the cleanup tool in safe mode?
