• Is my processor overheating?

So I have a Phenom II Quad Core Black Edition (955 chipset)...and when playing games I am reaching temperatures it has never reached before when I am playing a game. It has recently been reaching 70-75 C regardless of the temperature of the room I am in. I have dusted it thoroughly, disabled what overclocking I had on it, and even tried blowing external fans towards the processor fan hub (if that'd help at all). The only thing I haven't done is apply a new lining of thermal gel but from what I've heard it doesn't make a significant difference at overheating temperatures. What I want to know is, is my processor overheating or is it ok? If it is should I apply new linings of thermal gel or upgrade my cooling altogether? Thanks bros.
new thermal paste can make a huge difference if it's improperly applied currently, and make sure your voltage is at auto or default, you might have forgot to change it back after you reverted the overclock.
When playing a game my voltage is usually sustained at 1.4 V, does that sound about right? also thanks about the thermal paste
Well, 1.32 is default, it seems a bit high. You could even go into the bios and manually turn it down a little and most likely be perfectly stable, too.
Alright I will do that and see if that helps, if not its back to thermal paste which really I'm just too lazy to jump to it. thanks 70C is much too hot though right? like 10 degrees too hot?
62c is the maximum that 955 are supposed to run at, did you build the machine? are you sure you mounted the heatsink and everything correctly, and the clip is latched down?
At the time yes it was, I will take a look tomorrow to see if everything is in check + apply some more thermal gel. Thanks for the help man.
Applying more thermal paste could be bad though. You want to keep it to a thin layer that covers the top of the processor and not much more. Other than that, turning down the voltage lowers the heat output.
Apply thermal paste with great care.
Replacing the thermal compound makes a huge difference with the 955 stock heatsink. Just be careful when removing the heatsink, mine had set like cement and ripped the CPU from the socket when I removed it. No damage done thankfully, but holy shit that scares the hell out of you.
