I'm building a new computer in two months and was wondering whether it would be possible to use the Windows 7 upgrade disc as a first OS install. As it will be all I can afford at the time.

Yes, you will have to do a fresh install of 7 like you normally would with a regular copy, then do an upgrade install over that one in order to make the product key usable.

Actually, it might be best just to get an OEM copy instead, it's a bit cheaper than the Upgrade one and you don't have to do any of that crap above.
