Well it's official, I was nominated for the New York Boys State program a few weeks ago and last week I went before a panel of judges to interview me and the other nominee's on who they were going to pick to go. 10 boys were nominated and they accepted 4 to send to the program and I was one of them. For those of you who do not know what Boys State is here is a quote from wikipedia
Boys State and Girls State are summer leadership and citizenship programs sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary for high school students between their junior and senior years. Boys and Girls State programs both began in 1937 and are held in each of the U.S. states (excluding Hawaii), usually on a college campus within that state. In general, male and female programs are held separately, but at least seven states—Georgia, Nebraska, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and New Hampshire —host Boys' and Girls' State on the same campus on the same week. Program participants are first divided up into subgroups that are given city names. The citizens of each of these cities then elect mock municipal officials and representatives to the mock state legislature. If enough citizens are present, then a county level is added to the program between city and state. The participants also elect state officials, such as governor, lieutenant governor, and other state-level officials that their real state has. The legislature then meets to organize, elect leaders, and to pass bills, in a way that is similar to how their actual legislature operates. Some states hold mock trials, the participants volunteering as lawyers, accused, and juries, and others are able to form bands and choirs from the talent pools that they have assembled. Boys/Girls State is staffed by members and community leaders who volunteer their time and effort to this enterprise. Its administrative costs are defrayed by their Department (state) organizations. Citizens of Boys/Girls State are selected with the help of their high school principals on the basis of potential leadership qualities and must be between their Junior and Senior years in high school to qualify. Through these programs, it is estimated that each summer the American Legion Auxiliary alone is adding 19,000 girls trained in the processes of government to a group that by the end of 2006 will total about 1,103,000. Today's largest Boys State occurs annually in Ohio with over 1,300 boys congregating at Bowling Green State University. A group from Israel recently visited the Buckeye Boys State in Ohio to use it as a template for their own version.
I personaly can't wait to go, I get sent there for 5 days. I think one of the reasons I was picked is because when I graduate from highschool I'm enlisting in the army and they probably like that since it is sponsored by The American Legion. I thought I would share with you guys and see if any of you have ever had the opportunity to go. also here is a video of the exact one I am going to in June. Be careful. There are lots of these programs which try to flatter you by saying "you've been accepted!" when they have little value. I am well versed in honor societies and what not, and have never heard of these guys. Don't assume they are prestigious. EDIT: I'm not saying they are a scam. I'm sure they are not. I'm simply saying that might be trying to come of as more advantageous to your future than they actually are.
It's a legit program haha, my friend went to girls state and actually really enjoyed it. Good for you, OP.
I went to the Wisconsin one. Its not a scam, the American Legion pays for each representative they select. The Wisconsin one did not have as high of a military regime as the video though. That looks like boot camp, we sat around listening to techno most of the time.
boys state? yeah, you're gonna get raped bro.
Stay for one day, then leave the thing ala Wisconsin democrats.
can Facepunch make it through this thread without making gay jokes
Trambone is a instrument that plays songs.... Trambone.....
Yeah, it's not a scam I don't even have to pay for it the American Legion does. Also I'm looking for the bootcamp aspect of it so I can get a vague idea of what Basic Training will be like once I enlist in the Army.
American Legion? Fuck that conservative/patriotic/army Hooah indocrination shit they try to pull on young, impressionable teenagers.
I went to West Virginia Boys State and the whole damn thing sucked. It was half worshipping the U.S./and half being poorly educated about the government. It sucked. We had a talent show and it was actually preety entertaining. The last act turned out to be a slideshow with war veterens and old war photos with sad music played in the background and we all had to stand up with our hands on our heart for about 15 minutes before finally getting to go back to our bunks. We were playing the national anthem and I had my hands behind my back like I always do. Some WWII veteren hobbled over to me and smacked me with his cane because my hand wasnt on my heart. You're not really supposed to put your hand on your heart during the national anthem because you're not pledging to anything like you would during the Pledge of Allegiance. The funnest part of the whole thing was when we got to play frisbee for about half an hour. One of the worst parts was when the people who ran the camp decided it would make a good impression on our parents when they visited to dress up a mentally challenged man with a walker as Abe Lincoln and have him give us a 30 minute speech that no one payed attention to after hearing 5 minutes of it. And people annoyed me because there was always a few over-achievers who would do their damndest to rub their achievements in our face. I know I sound like I'm being a bitch about the whole thing but it was one of the most boring parts of my life.

It's gonna be sexy as fuck
Kansas Boy's State was a hell filled with militaristic demons with a marching fetish. You will walk, in formation, more than you want to after the first day. You will do things, without choice, all day every day of being there. They will stop being interesting fast.
well OP that's such a coincidence, i'm going to Boyzone!

I think church camp would be more exciting then Boys State.
It's gonna be sexy as fuck
I don't like you.

This looks like the single most biggest sausage fest on the planet.
This looks like the single most biggest sausage fest on the planet.
It is. We were in line getting ready to go eat breakfast but we had to do the pledge of allegiance and wait for all of us to get in our rows. A preety lady walked by and most of were just dumbfounded because we just realized we havent seen a single female in days.
I don't need to make gay jokes, here in NH, girls and boys are in the same place :smug:
Don't drop the soap.
I remember sending in an applcation for the Florida Boys State. I figured I had a chance, seeing as how the guidance person called me down to her office during class. Friends made fun of me, etc etc. I didn't even get accepted. :colbert:
at least in boy scouts you get to have fun and earn badges and shit but if you want to go to something boring it's your life
Except my scout leader turned out to be a pedophile and was arrested. :saddowns:
