OUSTON — The Republic of Texas is unlike any other volunteer, nonprofit organization in what used to be the Republic of Texas. Its monthly meetings are called joint sessions of congress. Members have minted their own silver and gold currency and carry ID cards warning police officers they are diplomatic representatives of the nation of Texas. Its vice president, a retired telephone company worker, sent a letter in 2011 to the governor of Oklahoma, informing her that she faced indictment because her state’s counties and territories were “trespassing inside the geographical boundaries” of its nation.
Such letters have failed to convince the authorities of the group’s novel belief — that Texas never legally became part of the United States and remains a separate nation. As a result of that belief, the group claims it had a duty to form a government, with a state department and with a court system run in part by a chiropractor in the Houston suburb of Katy.

This is the territory these nutjobs have claimed.
I always wonder if people like this ever consider how completely fucked they'd be if they actually seceded. The amount of funding that'd be pulled, populace that'd move out, trade that would be stopped due to taxes and how high the taxes would be jacked up on anything left, etc.. It would basically destroy any state that actually managed to do it.
It's absolutely ridiculous down here: I went to court one time for a speeding ticket, and the first thing the judge said when he entered was, "To all those who are going to claim that they don't follow the traffic laws of the U.S., but instead those of the Republic of Texas, pay your full fee up front right now because you don't have a case."
Rick Perry even said on some news interview that if Obama gets re-elected, he's going to secede from the Union.
Not to mention I see these stickers EVERYWHERE

In my experience talking to them, secessionists fully believe that the south, or even just Texas, can fully break away and be it's own independent nation with minimal issues, and even have a better economy.

So it's the current day governor's fault for borders that were outlined decades ago :v:

Fucking disgusting. Do they even know what a good border looks like?
Fine by me. The Northern USA would be a much better place.
Having a country that runs entirely on conservative values, hostile to liberals, right next door to us would be a bad idea. It would have impacts on the rest of the US too. There's a lot of shit going on in Texas specifically, like NASA, that would be a little complicated to just move. Besides, make the south independent and you make life for LGBTs there that much harder.

Back in the day when congress actually did things.
so do the secessionists and sovereign citizens get in fights with each other or are they buddy-buddy

I seriously hope they aren't "claiming" that territory solely so their state can look like it's holding a gun.

Is there a special reason why they've claimed this territory specifically? I know dick about the history of Texas.

It's the Texas territory before it joined the US

The South would immediately invade the rest of the US because the south would hold all the Republican warhawks.
Back in the day when congress actually did things.
Haha, that's funny. Sure our congress is at insane levels of dysfunction, however our congress has always been somewhat dysfunctional.
As much as I love Texas, being a proud Texan, I don't think seceding will be in our best interest.

Join the Confederacy.
We can suffer through the failure of Reconstruction together.
Does Texas really think the US would be able to resist invading an oil-filled desert theocracy when it's right next door?

Believe it or not, that's what the Republic of Texas looked like when it joined the US

This happened with us too, back in the day. Except that the South enlisted slaves in exchange for freedom. 10 years of war, they lost and the slaves that were freed by the south were sold once again as slaves.
Fucking disgusting. Do they even know what a good border looks like?
If your border doesn't tear a landmass asunder like a mosaic and inconvenience millions of people on a daily basis, you're not doing it correctly
Is there a special reason why they've claimed this territory specifically? I know dick about the history of Texas.
-beat me to it-
I hate the whole "Texas can secede" bullshit. The Supreme Court case of Texas V. White says that no state has permission to secede from the union.

I never met anyone that took secession as more than just a big inside joke.
texas is actually on its way to becoming a blue state
large population centers i.e. dallas and austin are increasingly more liberal as time goes on
Actually I'm well aware of this but just judging from the interactions I have with people every day, we've got a ways to go
