Ever since her birth 23 years ago, a team of researchers has been tracking every aspect of her development - gauging her progress as an infant, measuring her IQ as a preschooler, even peering into her adolescent brain using an MRI machine. Now, after nearly a quarter century, the federally funded study was ending, and the question the researchers had been asking was answered. Did cocaine harm the long-term development of children like Jaimee, who were exposed to the drug in their mother's womb? The researchers had expected the answer would be a resounding yes. But it wasn't. Another factor would prove far more critical.
Spoiler: That other factor is that almost all the kids in both samples were poor. And mostly black and poor.
If you're pregnant you probably should avoid coke, alcohol, smoking, all the unnecessary chemicals and shit. Can we agree on this?
There are certainly health risks to a pregnant woman using crack, and the article acknowledges this. I don't think anyone rational can disagree. However, the study's results show that the physical effects of crack on natal development are significantly less important than the environment the child is born into and raised in.
If you're pregnant you probably should avoid coke, alcohol, smoking, all the unnecessary chemicals and shit. Can we agree on this?
I've seen a documentary on a hospital which encrouraged pregnant junkies to stay on a low dose regimen provided by the hospital everyday. Their theory was that it was more dangerous for a baby tobe born and immediatly go through withdrawals, than for it to be born and given Laudanum, etc. and slowly weaned off the drugs.
If you're pregnant you probably should avoid coke, alcohol, smoking, all the unnecessary chemicals and shit. Can we agree on this?
Certainly, but people are bad at that. The theory was that, for some reason, cocaine was like some sort of hulk steroid for fetuses. Much like children who are exposed to too much alchohol during pregnancy and become wall-eyed fish mammals that stalk the earth, some influential scientists in the late 70's and early 80's theorized that this super drug would spawn a generation of deadly retard hulks. This study just shows that "yeah it's bad but the two packs a day your father smoked were worse."
