So I looked back about 15 pages and found no Joy Division thread. And since I'm just a puny bluemember I can't search. So, here goes, without further ado, my attempt at a decent Joy Division megathread.

Joy Division? What's that?
Well, why don't we start off by letting our good friend Wiki tell us a little bit about it.
Joy Division were an English rock band formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. Originally named Warsaw, the band primarily consisted of Ian Curtis (vocals and occasional guitar), Bernard Sumner (guitar and keyboards), Peter Hook (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Stephen Morris (drums and percussion).
Joy Division was a prominent punk and post-punk band in the late 1970's. Though short lived (only 4 years) they managed to dazzle the world and induce many a suicide through their magnificently touching and emotional music. The band was formed by Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook, after they saw a Sex Pistols show in 1976. Ian Curtis and Steve Morris were hired after troubles with their previous, much too aggressive drummer. They called themselves "Warsaw", but changed it to Joy Division (not as joyful as one would have thought, named after prostitutes in Nazi Concentration Camps). They released only 2 albums, but a variety of recordings, live and studio exists.
Joy Division suffered an abrupt end in 1980 when already depressed and epileptic singer Ian Curtis committed suicide, right at the beginning of their American tour. The remaining band members went on to form New Order.
Joy Division found most of its fame on radio, on John Peel's show, called The Peel Sessions. On said sessions rests the best recording of their most famous song, Love Will Tear us Apart, a song released only 2 months prior to Curtis' death. I'll post some songs from those sessions, since some of them don't appear on any albums.

Ian Curtis was the lead vocalist for Joy Division. Noted for a deep bass voice and incredible lyrical writing. He had epilepsy, which made performing live very difficult, poor bastard was prone to having seizures right on stage. After ending an unstable marriage, he committed suicide on May 18th, 1980.
Bernard Sumner

Bernard Sumner was Joy Division's lead guitarist. Along with Peter Hook, he formed the band after seeing The Sex Pistols play live. He also played keyboards and provided synthesizer effects.

Discuss Joy Division, discover Joy Division, love Joy Division.
already explored.
is their live material worth trying?
Definitely. I have 3 live albums (well, bits and pieces from 3) and they're all fantastic.
which one to get?
Joy Division is really awesome.
The ones I have are just some that I got from a mate, they're called Live at the Lyceum Ballroom, and Live at the Factory.
I recommend The Factory, if you can find it.
which one to get?
I have Les Bains Douches. very powerful, especially Disorder which is so much more electrifying than the album version.
Love Will Tear Us Apart (Peel Sessions version) is so much better than the album version. I prefer Ian's vocals on it, as well as the drumming, which is superb.
Tomorrow, I'm going to the library to get Touching From A Distance, Deborah's biography about Ian.
I've heard it's a decent read!

I read it a couple of years ago, it's pretty solid.
Definitely worth a read.
And Joy Division is quite good.
Curses, I have to wait 2 weeks for that book...
Come on kids, talk about Joy Division!
Might as well talk about New Order as well in this thread, their early stuff is pretty much spot on for the Joy Division feel (I have a feeling they were probably using stuff they had already written under joy division now that I think about it)

"She's lost control" certainly sounds better on the Peel Sessions as well
I love New Order. Their old stuff as much as their newer, more electronic stuff.
fave band 5evr

was meant to have some meet & greet with Peter Hook earlier this year to go along with his Closer tour here but he cancelled
so now I've got a poster and pass for a tour that never was
The live version of I Remember Nothing is fucking amazing

listened to unknown pleasures mid last year
listened to unknown pleasures mid last year

I personally find both records to be depressive. "Closer" is great.
New Order are releasing a new album next year, which is pretty relevant
pff, I was looking forward to a release this year. I would have sworn I saw a cover art too.
maybe, I just read it in a magazine on the weekend
Autosuggestion is an amazing song live, as is Candidate, though their recorded versions don't really do it for me. Brilliant band.

I know what I'm watching tonight :v: Cheers!
Fuck yes, god this band is good. Hits that one spot on the line between joy and sorrow.
And I've just realized that could sorta relate to their name, even if it's really a completely different meaning.
[editline]18th September 2012[/editline]
Fun fact if it hasn't been posted
When Ian suicided, Joy Divison's remains became New Order.
New Order makes the song Crystal.
The music video for Crystal contains a fictional band, The Killers, lip syncing to the song.
The name of the fictional band becomes the real name for The Killers.
The Killers eventually go on to cover Shadowplay by Joy Division.
