• Recipe for disaster: Ex-EA devs at Microsoft looking to make a fracnshise as popular as HALO
Deep in the clandestine cubicles of Vancouver, a team largely made up of former EA developers has been assembled. Yesterday, it finally went public. The Microsoft-owned Black Tusk Studios is working on a new franchise that it hopes will become “the next Halo.” If that doesn’t exactly rev your engine, no one would fault you. Microsoft doesn’t have the greatest track record with the PC in recent years. And Halo doesn’t have much of a track record on the PC at all. The new studio “will focus on the Xbox 360,” according to the Vancouver Sun, but it hasn’t explicitly ruled out bringing its mystery project to the PC. I know, I know. I’m not holding my breath either. But we can be optimistic, right? Studio manager Mike Crump told the Sun that Black Tusk has been operating in “stealth mode” as it put a team together. The studio currently boasts a team of 55 developers with an average of 12 years industry experience, and is looking to possibly double that in the near future. We’ll just have to wait and see if this will translate into something fresh and exciting for the PC.
Source: http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/11/30/microsofts-new-black-tusk-studios-headed-by-ex-ea-devs-looking-to-make-the-next-halo/ Another nail in the coffin, MS.
nail in the coffin? haha you're ridiculous
...disaster? Nail in the coffin? What's wrong with trying to make another big franchise? Are you an idiot?
"Oh no they are making a game which I am not obliged to buy!"
It seems OP is trying too hard.
You cannot make great games in the same way that alot of supermarket chickens are battery farmed chickens, this is a fact. Creating a truly fantastic franchise takes alot of time and effort and even more inspiration. Bungie like to take parts of their older games and their art styles and implement them into their newer games, the relationship between the art style of marathon and halo for instance.
You don't start a game thinking it will be a franchise. You make a great game and in case it will be critically acclaimed, goty awarded, and loved by the public, MAYBE a new franchise is born. Not the other way around. Edit: I'm not trying to bash them or anything. That's just my 2¢.
all we need is a modern take on a simple concept. Halo 1 was awesome because it threw you and a few people in a map with the same starting equipment and you had to fight for weapons, vehicles, and map control using the fundamentals of teamwork. This is the concept that made first person shooters so popular. nowadays you get to choose what weapons, perks, etc. that you get to start with before you even spawn, then duke it out for killstreaks, experience points, upgrades, etc. And since it doesn't even matter if your team loses anymore (because you get shitloads of EXP anyway), people fly solo the majority of the time instead of working together. I think one of the next big games will be a modern take on the classic foundations of first person shooters. idk just a rant
...disaster? Nail in the coffin? What's wrong with trying to make another big franchise? Are you an idiot?
No, the fact that these are EA devs and the fact that MS is involved (what happened to Rage?) tells me this will be a spectacular fail.
Haha, this is the same attitude that kiddies on the Game Maker forums have. "Making the next Halo". They'll fall flat on their faces.
No, the fact that these are EA devs and the fact that MS is involved (what happened to Rage?) tells me this will be a spectacular fail.
There is a difference between former EA devs, and corporate EA employee's. A highly experienced game developer is still a game developer. The only thing this proves is you have no fucking clue to what you are talking about.
This whole thread reeks of trying to hard to nail a shit company which may actually be doing something okay
OH NO! YOU WORKED FOR EA IN THE PAST?! YOU MUST BE STUPID AND EVIL!
No, the fact that these are EA devs and the fact that MS is involved (what happened to Rage?) tells me this will be a spectacular fail.
EA are not the developers. Black Tusk is a Microsoft owned studio of, keyword here so pay attention, former EA employees. Microsoft is involved because they're going to try to establish another console franchise. Rage has nothing to do with EA or Microsoft. There is no "recipe for disaster". This isn't "a spectacular fail". This is you blindly hating something for no reason and making no sense about it in the meantime. All Microsoft is trying to do here is start a studio for another flagship franchise, and personally I don't think this is anything to look down upon because the last studio they did this too (Bungie) did a pretty damn good job.
Haha, this is the same attitude that kiddies on the Game Maker forums have. "Making the next Halo". They'll fall flat on their faces.
What? They're going to fail because they want to make a game as popular as Halo?
I was curious why they were building an office here in Vancouver. This explains everything.
No, the fact that these are EA devs and the fact that MS is involved (what happened to Rage?) tells me this will be a spectacular fail.
Please stop with the bandwagon posting and just express your own opinion
No, the fact that these are EA devs and the fact that MS is involved (what happened to Rage?) tells me this will be a spectacular fail.

EA?! *GRUNT GRUNT* MICROSOFT?! *GRUNT* GRUNT* TRYING TO MAKE A GAME?!?!
[editline]30th November 2012[/editline] Seriously dude relax, they just want to make a go at establishing a franchise. Hell I with them both luck in their endeavors.
THAT'S IT, MICROSOFT IS FINISHED
No, the fact that these are EA devs and the fact that MS is involved (what happened to Rage?) tells me this will be a spectacular fail.
I hope you aren't the guy that goes "Micro$h!t"
Although it's a bit too optimistic, this is a good idea they have in mind. A new, different franchise would be a great thing right now.
What is it with Microsoft and Squares?
Oh you guys, i doubt it will be that bad, i have a feeling the problem is with EA's administration and management team, i mean look at valve, they started from microsoft's offspring, im have a feeling it will be a better game then what they will be forced to make at EA Studios.
To be honest I'm okay with this, although one can only hope it won't be XBOX exclusive like Halo (well, at least since the 2nd one onwards).
Replace looking with wish.
I thought good games came from wanting to create something original, not something "as popular as" or "grossing as much as" something else.
I thought good games came from wanting to create something original, not something "as popular as" or "grossing as much as" something else.
Its more or less a set goal. Think of it this way, I myself have plans for something original for a video game, yet I have a basic hope to make it better than Halo or other current blockbusters. Though will I get to it? Er, maybe not but only time will tell. Its like saying that you want to make something new that would surpass something old.
Well seeing as they're ex-EA devs, they made one right decision. Obviously there is nothing to say until some footage is shown.

Then there is nothing really to judge other then the people who are going to work on it.
Watch them make a game that's not the next of anything. Watch them make a groundbreaking, unique game that is awesome.
