An e. You can write it with one fluid swoop of a pen or one tap of the keyboard. The most commonly used letter in the English dictionary. Simple, right?
Now imagine it printed out millions of times on thousands of forms and documents. Then think of how much ink would be needed.
OK, so that may have been a first for you, but it came naturally to 14-year-old Suvir Mirchandani when he was trying to think of ways to cut waste and save money at his Pittsburgh-area middle school.
It all started as a science fair project. As a neophyte sixth-grader at Dorseyville Middle School, Suvir noticed he was getting a lot more handouts than he did in elementary school.
Interested in applying computer science to promote environmental sustainability, Suvir decided he was going to figure out if there was a better way to minimize the constant flurry of paper and ink.
Society is so flawed, how do we waste so much money on pointless shit.
He's not the first to say so but I am surprised that its on CNN.
I expected it to be something about shitty font licensing fees...
"Thank you, now we realize that we can save millions by changing to more efficient fonts.
From today forth, our official font will be Comic Sans."
Our teachers at school actually have us use a fonts that use less ink and we loose points by not doing so.

Seriously? This is a viable complaint, but you're saying this in reference to how much ink is used in certain fonts like the government was like "yeah let's use this specific font because it'll use more ink", nobody was even thinking about the amount of ink being used.

Also nobody in the government really cares, because one of the main purposes of the government is to spend money.
We should switch to Newspeak in order to save money.

We could save more by entirely switching over to thin stroke sans-serif typefaces.
Or we could start transitioning those documents to a digital format and save even more.

Ideally, they would find out how many paper documents each person/department uses on average per year, and in cases where it's worth it, buy them a cheap tablet so they can do all of those things digitally.
I just get the feeling that most of the waste comes from 1600 page bills being printed, distributed, and then someone makes a 2 word change and it has to be printed and distributed again.

the end times
A neophyte? He does look like he gets mad pussy.
Sounds like there are some great things ahead of this kid. I hope he at least gets a response from the government.
This kid's face reminds me of a US President, but I have no idea which one.
