Victorian patients and their families will be able to legally access medicinal cannabis in exceptional circumstances with the historic Access to Medicinal Cannabis Bill 2015 passing the Parliament today.
Victoria is the first state in Australia to make medicinal cannabis available to people in exceptional circumstances, safely, securely and lawfully.
The Bill – which delivers on the Andrews Labor Government’s election promise – creates a legal framework to enable the manufacture, supply and access to safe and high quality medicinal cannabis products in Victoria.
Children with severe epilepsy will be given first access to medicinal cannabis from early 2017.
i didn't see this posted but it's 6 days old
Slightly not so surprising knowing Vic but I really thought NSW would be the first to do it since they're already conducting trials and all.

It's pretty much a bipartisan stance and only a matter of time for elsewhere. Even Abbott supported this.
this is only for children with severe epilepsy, it is a trial starting next year and while they say they may plan to expand the list of illnesses it can be prescribed for it probably will be a long time before it's accessible to people with cancer patients undergoing chemo, adult epilepsy patients, AIDS patients, diabetes patients, parkinsons, MS, crohns disease, extreme anxiety, alzheimers and the list goes on.
that is unless this prompts more research into medicinal cannabis as treatment.

especially not here in queensland
The idea that politicians can set a list of what drugs should be prescribed for what disease is ridiculous. Politicians don't react fast enough to new research nor are they qualified.

Unfortunately we don't live in a technocracy.

It's in the trial stages. The government is also establishing an independent advisory to provide advice on possible expansion of patient eligibility. Also, the industry for cultivating medical cannabis doesn't even exist yet, and the first operation will only be small-scale in a Victorian research facility. You can't just expect the government to go '420 blaze it, medicinal cannabis for all' when there's not even any medicinal cannabis to prescribe - that Victorian research facility will probably only barely be able to meet the demand of the limited number of patients as is (which is a hell of a lot, 450 according to ABC News quoting the premier). It seems that of all of the patient groups, those children need it the most.
Of course, you would have got all of that if you read the article.

I'm aware and don't care. Politicians should never have had the power in the first place.

Aware of what? What don't you care about? And politicians should never have had what power? When was the first place?
