Navy Adm. William McRaven said three unpowered prototypes of the so-called Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit — known in military parlance as TALOS and dubbed the Iron Man suit after the one worn by the Marvel Comics superhero — are being assembled and expected to be delivered in June. The plan is to evaluate the technology with the goal of fielding a system by August 2018, he said.

The idea for the project came about several years ago after a member of special operations forces was shot and killed while entering the door of a suspected insurgent, McRaven said. A young officer asked him a question he couldn’t answer: After all these years in combat, why isn’t there a way to better protect operators going through the door?
http://defensetech.org/2014/02/11/admiral-iron-man-prototypes-coming-in-june/ [editline]2nd March 2014[/editline] I've looked around and couldn't find any other articles for the past month. Please notify me if this is late.
Color me legitimately intrigued at this. While I'm no real fan of the arms race, I'm still very interested to see what science can do.
So he WAS being serious! Also a video related to the project from last year. why are the fx so cheesy
I remember stumbling upon this awhile back, didnt know there was actually a thing going on, thats cool. [editline]2nd March 2014[/editline] Seems more like the Crysis nanosuit with how its being described in this video im watching though.
Is it really called TALOS? That's fucking sweet.
Is it really called TALOS? That's fucking sweet.
Now the bets are on which Talos it inadvertently referenced: The god of the Stormcloaks, or the god from the Forgotten Realms.
I'm surprised it took them this long Give someone one of these things and the only way you can take e'm down is with an RPG or huge explosive.
Now the bets are on which Talos it inadvertently referenced: The god of the Stormcloaks, or the god from the Forgotten Realms.
What do you mean? They referenced the greek mythos..?
Now the bets are on which Talos it inadvertently referenced: The god of the Stormcloaks, or the god from the Forgotten Realms.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talos Probably this one.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talos Probably this one.
Whoops, should have thought about that one first, zing for you :v:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talos Probably this one.
That's badass.
I'm surprised it took them this long Give someone one of these things and the only way you can take e'm down is with an RPG or huge explosive.
Or throwing a big sack of potatoes at them so they stumble and sitting on their back on the ground.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talos Probably this one.
That's what the Aldmeri Dominion want you to think, man.
Or throwing a big sack of potatoes at them so they stumble and sitting on their back on the ground.
The intention is to make it a powered exoskeleton, sounds like the tests will be un-powered but the final goal is to have it be weight-assisted. [editline]2nd March 2014[/editline] The first set of fully powered body armor better be [t]http://www.cryinghorn.com/fallout_apa_another_trophy.jpg[/t]
-snip-
Try to touch Talos now, altmer scum
The intention is to make it a powered exoskeleton, sounds like the tests will be un-powered but the final goal is to have it be weight-assisted.
Well, once it's powered, sure, but until it is, anybody wearing a suit like that will be very far from "invincible" as the armor will nothing but make them more likely to be physically restrained.
I can imagine soldiers humming "Iron Man" while rushing through doors and openings.
As long as we dont have the technology for an ARC reactor, a portable fusion energy generator, or really high density battery packs, I don´t see this suit being feasible in combat situations.
As long as we dont have the technology for an ARC reactor, a portable fusion energy generator, or really high density battery packs, I don´t see this suit being feasible in combat situations.
what if they have one but aren't telling us about it :tinfoil:
what if they have one but aren't telling us about it :tinfoil:
Then they are gigantic assholes. We could use such technology for exploring space. Cutting down the trip to Mars from 6 months to a few weeks would help spreading humans around. At the moment I feel like we are a bullseye for asteroids (watching Armageddon yesterday doesn´t help at all), just waiting to be cleansed from the earth. I want mankind to spread into the universe. I want mankind to look at sexy pictures of space and masturbate to it. And let the sperm in form of spaceships hit other planets where the fungus called humans grows and prospers. Space is big and empty you say? Then lets unempty it by creating an empire stretching throughout the galaxy.
It seems that at some point or another stuff from sci fi ends up actually becoming a reality. Also as far as the power system goes, most likely it will have batteries on some kind of backpack. Yes to an unassisted person this might weigh a lot, but with a powered exoskeleton assisting you, such a system actually works better than you might think. Also I would think this suit wont be used for extended periods of time, so long-term power is not needed.
It seems that at some point or another stuff from video games ends up actually becoming a reality.
Video games and books. Harry Pothead inspired the design of the real-life prototype invisibility cloak.

Are they fucking serious with that lens flare at 1:04?
United States belong to the Nords
this isn't a new thing but i don't think anyone's posted about it here
Now all we need is horse armor DLC and anti personnel mines strapped on top of the lances. Voilà, what do you have? Joust 20XX

Middle soldier in that picture looks like GDI soldier from tiberium wars.
