PARIS — Rejecting a push by Britain, European governments on Monday decided against providing weapons to Syrian rebel forces, expressing fears that more arms would lead only to more bloodshed in a conflict that has already taken nearly 70,000 lives. The decision, by European Union foreign ministers meeting in Brussels, illustrates the difficulty that Europe and the United States have had in dealing with the two-year-old Syrian civil war, despite their unanimous condemnation of President Bashar al-Assad and his ruthless battle to remain in power.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/eu-foreign-ministers-reject-arming-syrian-rebels/2013/02/18/6f019f4a-79e8-11e2-9a75-dab0201670da_story.html
Just so you guys know, the Syrian rebel forces consists of a motley crew of every person and their mother who wants to take down al-Assad's government, including those who we deemed as terrorists. Situation such as this is a doubled-edge sword and inaction may be the best move.
A good thing most likely. There would be lots left over after the fighting and just look at what happened in Libya after the war with armed groups still around some months after and I'm sure there's probably more chances of more threatening extremist groups acquiring this surplus in Syria.
For those of you who have seen the recently released video of Syrian rebels beheading civilians, this probably isn't a smart move.
There is to much risk of it falling into the wrong hands. The difference between Syria and Libya is the fact that in Syria Islamist extremist fighters are far more common and a bigger part of the rebel force.
Maybe if Saudi, Qatar, Turkey and Nato stopped giving the rebels weapons. Then maybe russia and iran would stop aswell.
Good, Syrian rebels are full of dickheads.
