The Birth of a Nation (1915)
Gone With The Wind (1939)
The Red Badge of Courage (1951)
The Raintree County (1957)
Horse Soldiers (1959)
Shenandoah (1965)
Glory (1989)
Gettysburg (1993)
Gods and Generals (2003)
The following have major civil war segments, but are not about the period specifically:
They Died With Their Boots On (1941)
How The West Was Won (1963)
Do you happen to know of any others?
EDIT: Recommendations made by others here:
- North and South
- Cold Mountain
- Ride With The Devil
- Andersonville
- The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (why did I forget to mention this?)
The Patriot? Can't remember if it was about the civil war or not, but I think so.

Actually, that one took place during the revolutionary war.
Cold Mountain (2003)
Ride with the Devil (1999)
Andersonville
But maybe the best film that touches every issue of the civil war is the "North And The South" Mini-Series ( 1985, Warner Bros). 12 hours long all together but worth watching.
Glory.
Best one out there.
Which movie had the guys head blown off by a canon?
why is the good the bad and the ugly not on there

I knew I had forgotten something...

The Patriot, there was a guys leg too if I remember correctly.
You basically have them all, all the good ones anyway.
Gods & Generals was so god damned awful.
I honestly couldn't believe it was made by the guy who did Gettysburg.
Cold Mountain and Glory are the only really good ones that come to mind that I have seen.
The opening scene to Cold Mountain was BRUTAL.
Andersonville was great.
Gangs of New York.
As always, it needs to be pointed out that
happens during the american civil war =/= about the american civil war
now i want to watch glory
There was one made in the fifties where some Union spies ride a Confederate train, I forgot what it was called tho
Dances with wolves.
What was that movie where some Union spy gets hunted by a cannibal Confederate officer?

You'd sit through 3 hours of a non audio film about the klu klux clan, because it has the US civil war in it?
My opinion of Glory will be forever tainted because I originally saw it at school.
Also because of [sp]the massive downer ending.[/sp]
The Birth of a Nation is an important film for cinema alone, but it's one of the most racist film I ever seen.
Great execution, terrible idea.

Well, you can't exactly fault such an old film for reflecting the attitudes of it's time (though from what I hear, even many of the contemporaries thought it was too racist). If on the other hand someone made a film like that TODAY, then I too would complain. Besides, if the outdated morality makes this film bad, wouldn't pretty much every old movie be bad in some way when judged by this same standard?
Besides, I didn't limit the OP list to great civil war films only. I don't really find BIRTH' to be a great film for entertainment reasons, but because of it's importance. GODS AND GENERALS is overly disjointed and too sentimental sometimes (too many speeches, sappy "tragic battle music", etc...). GLORY and GETTYSBURG suffer from many of the same sentimentality problems, but they are great films otherwise. HORSE SOLDIERS is merely an okay film, embarassingly bad by John Ford standards, and it's climax is terribly weak (some stuntman died when filming the final battle, so Ford chose to end the movie to a wall). RAINTREE COUNTY is a bit of a GWTW copycat in terms of cinematic intention, though entertaining enough at times. SHENANDOAH is appealing due to it's powerful anti-war theme and James Stewart's performance, but it's a bit flawed in so many minor ways.
The really good ones IMO (of the ones I've seen):
Gone With The Wind
They Died With Their Boots On*
The Red Badge of Courage
How The West Was Won
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Glory
Gettysburg
(* = If you're picky about historical accuracy, avoid it)
Thank you for this list.

There was also a head explosion in Glory.

Though the odds are unfathomable, they actually came out with a sequel titled The Fall of a Nation.
Luckily it's believed to be a lost film.
You know, The General is technically a Civil War film. Silent but funny.
-snip-
I just suggested something that was suggested only one post ago. The General is a really good movie. It is hilarious and has some good action bits too actually.
Glory is one of the only ones I can think of. I'm not quite counting The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, mainly 'cause the civil war isn't the main focus in the film.
