• Family computer won't boot

I'm having a problem with my Family computer, It won't boot up, it makes three or four beeping tones and fails to boot. Sometimes it will boot and stay on, but when it's on, it's started to turn itself off for no reason. It mentions something about the CPU overheating and to be serviced when it does boot, but I can't think what would have caused it to overheat (fan still spins, almost no dust), and it's far too old to service (2003). I don't know the exact specs but I think it's around this: Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2x 512 Mb ram D: 120 Gb C: 80 Gb Runs windows XP (I can't find the exact type of motherboard it uses but I found a motherboard box nearby saying it was Y2K compatible) I know it's an old, worn down computer, but I just want to see if anyone has an idea on how I can fix it for one last time. [editline]03:02PM[/editline] Now it doesn't even make a beeping sound anymore, I think it might be cutting it's power. I'm guessing the power supply might be busted. I would still like to hear ideas on how to fix it though.
[QUOTE=Satane;23326547]Try re-applying the thermal paste it still sounds like it's overheating.[/QUOTE] I was thinking that, but I don't have any to replace it with. Well, I've convinced my dad to buy a new computer, hopefully that'll solve everything. in the mean time, I have to lend them my laptop, so I'm probably going to have to clean out all the unneeded files my family puts on.
Pretty sure you can buy a tube of thermal paste for like 15 bucks and that covers 3 pc's or so.. [editline]10:26PM[/editline] Buy it from computer stores or newegg.
Beeping indicates a problem with the POST (Power-on self-test) as the BIOS loads. Each BIOS has a list of beep codes that indicate different problems. Look up your BIOS's model and find out what the beep codes mean.
I solved the problem, It WAS the power supply, my brother's friend put a spare one in and it work perfectly.
you shouldn't ignore the cpu overheating message though. Whenever you have time, you should re-apply thermal paste onto the cpu. Especially with the temperatures during summer.
