Chess grandmaster Dorsa Derakhshani was banned by Iran for not wearing a hijab. Dorsa's brother Borna was banned too, who was playing a chess match against Israel.
Dorsa, 18, is currently studying in Spain and had previously participated in the Gibraltar games independently. Her brother Borna, who is 15, had also registered in the games on his own.
...
Dorsa is a member of the Iranian Women's National Chess Team. She is also the sixth world champion in under-18 games. Well, that never mattered compared to donning a particular attire. She got banned for not covering her hair at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival.
According to the head of Iran's Chess Federation Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, they will "seriously deal" with Dorsa for not observing the veil, and brother Borna who played with an Israeli player.

I hope she gives her nation the finger. A person as smart as her could probably get a work visa and citizenship anywhere she wants. Same for her brother.
All I can see this doing is pissing the young people of Iran and chess world in general off.
I think any other nation would gladly have the both of them.

Are arabs really this pissy about jews? wow
What a fucking joke, can't wait for all the old conservative fucks to die off so Iran can emerge as a moderate country.

A good chunk of them behave like children when it comes to Israel. Last year an Egyptian judoka refused to shake hands eith hos opponent on the grounds that he was Israeli.

They are.
A Saudi woman last Olympics withdrew from the first Judo round just so she wouldn't have to fight an Israeli.
Iran also holds Holocaust cartoon drawing contests every year with a 50k prize pool and if an athlete refuses to compete against an Israeli, they get the same cash reward as a gold star medalist.

How can a Saudi woman even fight in Judo considering their required attire?

No idea.
You can probably find a video of it.

Note this isn't the judoka that download mentioned specifically, but I think it's the first Saudi female judoka that was allowed to compete in the Olympics.
This sort of anal retentive zealotry is going to bite them in the ass HARD at some point. You can't keep this up and prosper.
Maybe, you're talking about this:

We also got this:

It's ridiculous, sports are about respect between athletes, not politics.

I agree - however, it's also possible that this athlete has family back home who could suffer the wrath of his government if he was seen in public, representing the country and fraternizing with the enemy. A lot of the time, they really might not have a choice and have to toe the line, which is very sad.
If you hated Israel that much wouldn't you want to compete against them for the chance of beating their ass down? This makes them look weak

To even recognize that Israel a legitimate state is too far for most Arab countries. To fight against Israel is to implicitly recognize it. Also, the shame of losing to an Israeli would be immense and doubly so if that Israeli happens to be a Jew.

To be fair, it doesn't sound like these two players minded playing Israelis. It was the Iranian Chess Federation that said no.

Do these people see themselves as some superior Aryan-like race?

Well, pan-Arab nationalism is a thing.

I'm not saying this about all Arabs, I know a few arabs who don't have a problem with Israel but they don't speak for their governments.
All these aside, she's pretty good looking
Hopefully they both just brain drain and move to another country where they won't be treated dogmatically.
God damn it Iran, why would you want to cover up someone that beautiful.
[sp]For real though, I hope she and her brother gives the middle finger to Iran and goes to play for another country. I'd find it hilarious if they ended up playing for Israel just to fuck with Iran, but any country will do really.[/sp]

Maybe you should do more research about the region before commenting about it

He said Arabs not Muslims/Islam, but nice try
He said Arabs not Muslims/Islam, but nice try
region not religion
Maybe countries that act like this towards other countries, or treat sporting women like this should be barred from international sporting events such as this and the Olympics.
It's not in the spirit of sportsmanship at all, and if they can't participate without getting pissy and making a scene, maybe they should be kicked out until they get their heads out of their ass.
He said Arabs not Muslims/Islam, but nice try
When did I mention religion? Learn how to read before acting like a big shot.
All this talk about Arabs would seriously trigger a Persian if one were here.
The funny thing is, the only Arabic person talked about in this article is the Israeli guy.
Are arabs really this pissy about jews? wow
*Muslims
Iran is a Persian country, not an Arab one.
