When you think of sexism in Hollywood, the objectification of men isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind. However, according to actor Kit Harington of the hit show Game of Thrones, sexism against male actors in Hollywood is a much bigger issue than the public would expect.
“I like to think of myself as more than a head of hair or a set of looks,” he said to the Sunday Times Magazine. “It’s demeaning. Yes, in some ways you could argue I’ve been employed for a look I have. But there’s a sexism that happens towards men.”
As the heartthrob character of Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, Harington has quite the extensive fan base, but not everyone was happy with his comments. One fan was even prompted to comment on his words, saying, “Two words for you Kitty Kat…Boo Hoo.” Considering that such on-screen careers as acting and modeling rely heavily on appearance in order to fit a specific role, Kit’s words can seem slightly ungrateful for his success.
Further driving this point home, Kit goes on to explain what he believes sexism toward women in the film industry is like, saying: “There’s definitely a sexism in our industry that happens towards women, and there is towards men as well. At some points during photoshoots when I’m asked to strip down, I felt that.“
The article doesn't say barely anything about the backlash he's supposedly facing. It quotes a total of one example. It doesn't even mention where the backlash is (on twitter or wherever). In fact, despite the backlash being seemingly the subject of the article title, it gets a total of 3 sentences.
Pretty shitty article.
Can you guys just wake me up when all this fucking gender politics shit is done and over with?

Might as well wake you up once the heat death of the universe happens. Because this shit will never end.

What, when some anti-PC tyrant starts a holocaust and wipes all everyone who has differing opinions? There will always be someone with differing opinions, this article is certainly not news and seems to feed the PC boogieman.
This gender double standard where some things are an injustice for one while acceptable for the other is no secret.
One of many reasons I hate this shit.
while I don't know if he's really facing a "wave of backlash", he does bring up an interesting point
Most legal systems heavily discriminate against men.
We've solved a lot of gender equality problems in the western world, when it comes to women - they can vote, they can own property, the wage gap was obliterated ages ago (even if there's still an earnings gap - but that's because women are smart enough to not be wageslaves their entire lives).
I'd be nice, for once, to take care of some male problems that have come to being.
I thought feminists stopped watching Game of Thrones after the rape scene last season
snip, bad argument
Every source I can find about the "backlash" I can find cites tweets with a max of 20-30 retweets. Here's Moviepilot, with some tweets totally unrecognized beyond 2 favorites. GlobalNews.ca cites some of the same tweets, none of whom are known people, none of whom have any media clout, none of whom are important in any way at all, really.
It's hardly a backlash. Plenty of online media sources are applauding him for this. The "backlash" he's facing are people with two or three likes of their tweets. The most is 310 favorites - on the internet, that's still nothing.
If you're sick of outrage culture, stop participating in it. There aren't that many people mad about his comments. You getting mad at those people is unnecessary when you could ignore their 2-favorites tweets and move on with your life.
A lot of articles about "outrage" that I've seen are like this.
For now I'm gonna guess it's because, since what level of fervor constitutes an outrage or controversy is subjective, it's easy to write one for every conceivable thing that has at least a couple people tweeting about it. And reporting on "outrage" tends to drum up counter-outrage and net a lot of pageclicks.
[editline]yes[/editline]
Basically :clickbait: strikes again.

Exactly this. The "backlash" at some comment or another rarely hits the thousand mark. It's not even worth paying attention to. There are more people that believe that healing crystals can purify your body and soul of cancer than there are people outraged about Kit Harington's (justifiably true) comments on Hollywood sexism. Idiots are everywhere - why humor them?
Online clickbait sites love to pick out nobodies who overshare their opinion on Twitter just to generate another clickbait article. Online journalists are basically those same nobodies getting paid $20 an article to keep an eye on twitter and wait for someone to criticize something to publish another clickbait article about how "people are angry about x" to get another $20. Who cares?
I do think it's kind of funny that people take one position (I.E. "patriarchy is bad"), then spin it and use "patriarchal" ideals to promote their shit ("aww, cry your widdle man tears ;(")

It's always a little funny to me when there's an article like this that cites like, two tweets, and then it generates its own outrage over 'outrage culture' or something like that.

Yeah but this shit has really only started being a relatively big deal in the past few years.

Because their views aligned with the writer's views, so they can write what they want, without immediately seeming biased.
Because their views aligned with the writer's views, so they can write what they want, without immediately seeming biased.
And why care about the writers? This shit seeps upwards to mainstream media because people pay attention to it. The writers of BuzzFeed and every millionth other hack tabloid internet drama news site out there are as stupid as the people complaining in the first place. Why do they deserve any attention? Because they're "journalists?" They aren't - they watch Twitter and try to float it online as drama for pageviews. It requires as much talent as those Asian people who have 50 phones in front of them to rate apps 5 stars over and over.
I can write whatever I want, and if I cite a tweet with 2 favorites as a source, you should completely ignore anything I had to say. Sure, "people are angry" about x, but not many. Not enough to care. I wouldn't care if Person 4356 was upset about that one stop sign on the corner in Longville, Canada, population 300, so why the fuck should I care what Person 4877 has to say about Kit Harington? I don't know them, they're not reputable, they have no credentials, they aren't educated on anything, and it's celebrity gossip tabloid news. Why care?
Sexual objectification is not, and never will be, sexism. It's how humans work.
That's a good photo of him.
It's not like sexism against men and sexism against women are mutually exclusive concepts.
I don't get why people are upset when someone points out the obvious existence of sexism against both sexes.
Sexual objectification is not, and never will be, sexism. It's how humans work.
Objectifying the sexual aspect is totally fine
Turning someone into exclusively a sex object, devoid of person hood (a LITERAL object) is pretty bad.
The whole sexual objectification issue is pretty overblown. Sure, when someone is committing rape they are treating their victim as a sexual object, and that's wrong. But sexy men and women in media aren't harmful in my opinion, good looks and sex appeal are, well, appealing, and that's fine.
I don't know why it's considered sexist for the industry to require male and female actors to look good for certain roles.

I think this is the first time i've ever seen someone try to accuse the opposition to political correctness of tyranny and stifling dissenting speech and opinion. That's amazing, dude.

I thought that was every episode or something.
yeah my man keep fighting the good fight dont let those libbies take over
ouch, i see what you did there, associating me with the far right and those crazy conservative conspiracy theorists. you showed me, that one's really gonna hurt in the morning!!!
He's stating the obvious and he's not puttin male sexism above female sexism. What's the big deal?

He brought up sexism against men.
