• Anyone know anything about Jeep Wranglers?

I've always been pretty interested in the Jeep line of cars, and today I saw someone in my neighborhood selling a Jeep Wrangler 4.0 L Sport for about $8,000. Take note though, that there is a small patch of rust above the front left wheel. Does anyone have any experience with this type of car? Any information or opinions is greatly appreciated! With that price you could get one minus the rust.

I've heard that Jeeps post-1980s have some massive reliability problems.
I've heard that Jeeps post-1980s have some massive reliability problems.
Any specific models or just everything post-1980's? Are the reliability problems things such as engine trouble?
my 88 cherokee is still going strong. I haven't even had starting problems with it
Only problem with any jeep, wranglers in particular, is that people mod the fuck out of them in their garage and you can't be assured they know what they are doing. Wranglers are generally priced based on what money has gone into buying lift kits and such for them, not their actual value as a drivable car.
I have a 1998 Wrangler, bought it brand new and I love it, any specific questions?
Alright here's a little update. I went back and took a closer look at the specifications of the car. The seller didn't list miles anywhere on the info sheet. However they did list that it's a 1997 model with new tires/wheels, new exhaust, new metal doors, soft top and hard top, and new header. I also took a closer look at the rust spot above the wheel and it looked pretty iffy. How hard is it to replace just one part of a jeep? Estimated price range? edit: Oh, and on the inside door I could see just bare metal. Is this common for jeeps?
ALWAYS CHECK THE FRAME FOR RUST i cant tell you how many jeeps ive bought only to have the frames rusted and cracked everywhere ive owned 2 cj5s (both 1977's) and 3 cj2a's and a 1994 wrangler 2 of the cj2's had super rusted frames along with the wrangler (it looked like the previous owner had tried jumping it and left it in a field for a few years) also make sure it dosent have any electrical problems as those can be a pain to fix also some years of wranglers can have bad front axles (dont rember which years) with weak ball joints [editline]13th September 2011[/editline] also you might wanna check for body filler. since theres a large unusual looking rust spot. you never know what people do. also on replacing a single fender you might wanna check http://www.4wd.com/Jeep-Body-Parts-Roll-Cages-and-Jeep-Frames/Jeep-Replacement-Steel-Fenders.aspx?t_c=81&t_s=522&t_pt=101333
Replacing single parts should be pretty easy, just find a jeep at a scrap yard for parts. As for the door, you mean there was no inside panel on it?

Very informative post.
Replacing single parts should be pretty easy, just find a jeep at a scrap yard for parts. As for the door, you mean there was no inside panel on it?
Yeah, it pretty much looked like that. If I remember correctly though, it was black and did have some of texture to some parts of it, but there was this part in the middle of the door that looked like just grey metal. I'll try to take a picture of it tomorrow when I pass by it again.
Also while test driving, ask if you can stop by a mechanic and get a second opinion on the quality of used vehicle you consider buying.
'88 Wrangler owner reporting. Only had issues with broken gear on flywheel/starter, rarely when starting. Other than that I have 130,000 miles and zero frame rust. Minnesota has been nice to me apparently.
A little tip, especially with the rubicons, and it looks like that has the same tires, but be very careful about wet roads, sure the tires give great traction in mud/snow, but wet pavement they are horrible, I drive a 2009 rubicon, and am quite glad is has such a great traction control system, even with it it'll spin the tires in the rain at the slightest bit of acceleration.
Whatever you do, don't get a new bodystyle extended wrangler, or a new cherokee, or any other jeep for that matter. They're more looks than performance now.
not the new wranglers Jeep totally ruined the offroad capability with the new "cherokees" that for some reason are called liberty now
New wrangler still has manlyual tranny and a manual transfer case shifter, still kickin ass, jeep.
Aw I wouldn't mind owning a Jeep Liberty :( When I get to that point in my life where I can afford a little extra dosh and don't really need to seriously worry about gas prices anymore. In any case, my dad has a Jeep Wrangler from 2000 or so. Nice car, I don't think he's had to do any real major repair work on it at all since he's owned it (got it newish I think). When its summer outside he just takes it all off and drives it around naked :D (the car, not his clothes silly) Just gotta watch out on turns, as they are pretty suceptible to rolling. And don't expect good gas milage from them. Also 8k for that car is a pretty terrible price IMO. If the car was in good condition all around.. maybe. But for how old it is, plus all the problems and missing things mentioned, def not worth almost new-used car price. Even with the added stuff. [editline]25th September 2011[/editline] Oh and bare metal is not normal for the inside panels BTW
