• Man in wheelchair denied Atos disability benifit assessment due to being in a wheelchair
A disabled man was turned away from his incapacity medical assessment by Atos because his wheelchair was a health and safety risk, he said. The couple made their way to the centre, in Rutland Street, and took the lift upstairs but said they were told that because he had been seen in a wheelchair he could not have his assessment. Mr Foreman said: "Because we went into the medical health centre in a wheelchair they wouldn't assess me.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-22992152
Alright what the fuck? Who the hell makes these rules?
Well someone has shit for brains.
So they ban wheelchairs in a health assessment place? Logic.
I know it's the UK but I believe I speak for all first-world countries when I say I'm absolutely sick of disability programs fucking over legitimately disabled people. My mother has hemiparesis and she has absolutely had trouble getting benefits from Social Security, let alone little things like disability parking passes.
"The Department of Work and Pensions, which owns the building, released a similar statement adding: "If people have mobility problems, which may make evacuation in the event of a fire difficult, a home visit or an appointment at an alternative assessment centre is arranged." Makes sense, but seeing as we're reading this article then that alternative assessment wasn't arranged.
For anyone who doesn't know, Atos are responsible for assessing if you are fit for work or not and therefore able to receive state support or not. Since he couldn't go for the assessment his financial support will stop, if he can't go for another assessment, he will be left with no income.
If he received the letter they spoke of, couldn't he just have re-arranged the appointment - it would have been easier for them both as they said it was a struggle..
Man we should also ban canes for blind people too And oxygen tanks for people with barely any lungs
"They said they wouldn't do it because I was in a wheelchair. Even though the wife said she would take the wheelchair out they still wouldn't let me go in, they just refused.
At this point they're just being absolute dicks.
Wonder if this will result in a suit.
Wonder if this will result in a suit.
No:
In a statement Atos said letters warn people that if they would not be able to descend a flight of 30 stairs in an emergency then an alternative assessment should be arranged. "We let people know about access prior to scheduling appointments to try to ensure no-one goes to a centre that is not appropriate for them," it added.
[I am man in wheel chair] Just to answer [butt2089] all you are told is to bring all medication and medical aids with you to the medical. I would think that a wheel chair is an aid, DWP new what position i was in a month before as they had all my medical records. and i have since had a letter to say sorry for how i was treated by atoss and they say that people with a walking stick is the same as in a wheel chair a fire risk . as for another comment i can feel a claim coming on well we have tried all over the place and no body will help even citezens advice cuz we are going up against the government. And i had disability taken away 2 and half years ago and am still fighting that as atoss say there is now't wrong and my wife has since paid £600 for an MRI scan and it shows all the damage in my spine with prolaps's top of neck and base of spine so what the hell am i supposed to do

ATOS polices are terrible, the staff of these medicals have to deny 40% of people to save the government more money and get more people back into work. The BBC did an undercover documentary on it and it was disgusting, they was denying blind people because they can read Braille like understanding basic words such as exit and danger. If you went into the interview drunk and was classed as an alcoholic, you would be accepted because they did not want to deal with them. I know this because my brother in law does it every time. So now he gets an extra £40 a week to spend on more beer. Its completely disgusting The genuine people get shitted on while the dodgy fuckers get given more money and all because the government want to save money.
The way ATOS works is like this: The moment you talk to them, you have lost your disability benefits, just like that. It is up to you to prove to them that you actually need them. What they do is they ask you seemingly benign questions, like "do you have a cat in the house" or "do you do your own shopping?" Answered "Yes", to having a cat? Bam! denied, since if you can take care of pet, you don't need disability benefits. Do your own shopping? Benefits gone, regardless of the fact that you are able to do so because of special aides, bought with benefit money. Interviewer's a douchebag? Denied. Interviewer doesn't like your hairstyle? Denied. What happened in this story is this: The moment he was scheduled for an interview, his benefits were scrapped. Since he can't get to the appointment to reclaim them, he's fucked and is out at least one month of benefit payments. This shit has been directly linked as the cause of (financial) depression and suicides and needs to stop. I'm not from the UK, but have an ex-army friend that has to deal with ATOS as a result of his physical health stemming from his service. The horror stories I hear from him and others are terrifying. Do a simple search for "ATOS suicide" if you don't believe me. For example, ATOS is not supposed to contact anyone suffering from mental illness, as the stress from it could make things a lot worse. They don't give a shit and still hound people. One case had a guy slit his own throat upon reading a letter from ATOS, as they wanted to talk to him about his benefits possibly being cut.
