KONG: SKULL ISLAND confirmed for 2017, GODZILLA 2 for 2018, GODZILLA VS. KONG for 2020
Burbank, CA – October 14, 2015 – Following Legendary’s and Warner Bros. Pictures’ 2014 success with the global reinvention of the Godzilla franchise, the companies have come together to create an epic, new shared cinematic franchise. All-powerful monsters become towering heroes for a new generation, revealing a mythology that brings together Godzilla and Legendary’s King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new. Monarch, the human organization that uncovered Godzilla in the 2014 film, will expand their mission across multiple releases.
The announcement that the reinvention of monsters continues was made today by Legendary CEO, Thomas Tull and Kevin Tsujihara, Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros. The initial trio of films are 2017’s KONG: SKULL ISLAND, GODZILLA 2 in 2018 and then GODZILLA VS. KONG, arriving in theaters in 2020. While Legendary maintains its new home at Universal Pictures, the GODZILLA films remain in partnership with Warner Bros., who will now also distribute KONG as a part of this franchise. Production on KONG: SKULL ISLAND begins October 19th.
Warner Bros. and Legendary released Godzilla in May 2014 with an agreement to release Godzilla 2 on June 8, 2018. Both films feature the human Monarch organization. Shortly following Legendary’s pact with NBC Universal, Legendary acquired rights to additional classic characters from Toho’s Godzilla universe, including Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. This paved the way for developing a franchise centered around Monarch and anchored by Godzilla, King Kong, and other famous creatures.
Look I'm as big a fan of Godzilla and King Kong as the next kaiju nerd but any giant monster fan will point out this big flaw right here:

King Kong is, traditionally, about 1/16th the size of Legendary's Godzilla.
So they either have King Kong be enormous in his solo movie or they have to come up with some bullshit way to gigantify him for the versus movie.
FUCKING EXCITED. Really, i love monster movies and i love Godzilla. I think this is going to be awesome.
I guess that means the Godzilla x Pacific Rim crossover isn't happening.
I don't remember, did people like the King Kong movie from 2005?
I am expecting it to be 15 mins of screen time for both monsters. The rest of the time is going to be filled with boring people stuff.
but I'm still excited.
I want pacific rim still :(

I loved it

I enjoyed it when I saw it as a kid, but my experience might've been colored by playing the greatest movie tie-in game of all time shortly beforehand.
Honestly, I'd watch a small King Kong duke it out with a giant Godzilla. If done correctly, it could be very entertaining.

pretty damn great, the game owned bones too
yeah the game was pretty fun too, shit 2005 I was in year 5. Probably 11 years old
The '05 Kong was really good, it just had a bit too much exposition in the beginning.
The game was radical though

well it worked with the toho king kong vs godzilla . king kong doesn't have to be small (relative to godzilla)
Can anyone find the scene from 2005 King Kong where Adrian Brody types "Skull Island" in the strangest, most dramatic way possible?
If I remember correctly, King Kong vs Godzilla was supposed to be Godzilla vs Frankenstein, but the rights for Frankenstein and such were in the backlog, and Universal was more than willing to make a deal with Toho on King Kong right away.
"Wait what, a giant frankenstein!?" you might ask? Well yes.
The (original) story is that Dr. Viktor Frankenstein was working on his infamous experiment in 1945 when the war was about to end, and so the monster's heart is transported on a Japanese submarine that was hiding in the Kiel canal. Little did they expect that the heart would end up in Nagasaki, where it was nuked.
Fast forward to the late 50s/early 60s, and the monster's heart has mutated into a multi-story tall jolly green giant that fights the adorable, big-eared Baragon.
I shit you not. Frankenstein Conquers the World. Look it up. 1965. I'm not joking.

Ugh the shit people stored in Nagasaki, I mean how were we supposed to know both a gigantic lizard AND Frankenstein's monsters heart were there , also mothra for some reason
As a Godzilla fangirl crossover movies like this one always leave a bad taste in my mouth even upon just hearing about it. The orginal King Kong vs Godzilla was a big mess and was desgined to please american audiences, and I have no doubts this one will too. I don't like King Kong being associated with Godzilla just because they're both 'kaiju'. Kong is the size of a bus and all he did was climb a building and get killed, he didn't really offer much in terms of traditional Kaiju movies, not to say its a bad movie.
I just want to keep them seperate, King Kong and Godzilla have always been seperate entities in my eyes with their own universal rules and themes and combining them just never seemed kosher to me.
Megatron is bigger than King Kong?
offtopic but i give no shits, but the scale of that Rancor from Jedi is completely fucked, which makes me question the integrity of the other measurements. I'm pretty sure the pit Luke fell into under Jabba's throne(?) was ~35-40 meters deep, assuming that the rancor itself was the projected 30m. I'd say it was more the size of Kong at 20.
regardless this flick could go either way, as previously stated they'll probs bog it down with pointless exposition and human drama bullshit leaving no time for monster fighting. so i'll refrain from getting excited here.
Last godzilla movie was garbage
I cannot express my displeasure at this. They're both going for serious themes, and there is no way, unless you somehow have a ~100 meter King Kong, which in itself is retarded, you could have Kong fight Legendary Godzilla.
Had no idea the Cloverfield monster was that big
I want pacific rim still :(
Yes! Because then we can have mecha godzilla.
