Old games cause monitor to black out, sound repeats.

I have a really strange problem that's only recently started to happen.
Whenever I play certain games they will eventually make my monitor lose signal and go black, whilst the last sound that played repeats (causing a rather unhealthy-sounding buzz.). However the power is still on and my computer is whirring away as normal. No amount of waiting or ctrl+alt+delete brings the display back on. The only way to fix the problem is to power it off with the power button.
I've heard numerous reports of similar things and the suggested causes have been varied, some said it could be a CPU issue, some said graphics card overheating, and some said a RAM problem. However I have monitored all of these things whilst playing and none of them have reached any kind of dangerous levels of temperature or load.
The weirdest part about this problem is that it only seems to occur on older, less-demanding games.
I can play Saints Row the Third, Skyrim, The Witcher 2 and Batman Arkham City for hours on end maxed (or almost maxed) out with no problems whatsoever, but as soon as I try games such as Stronghold 2, Empire Earth, Mount and Blade, or Hitman: Blood Money this issue starts cropping up.
I manage to play Hitman: Blood Money for a good hour or two before any problem arises. Mount and Blade dies within seconds of reaching the map screen. Empire Earth and Stronghold 2 tend to die within about 15 minutes of gameplay.

I'll be massively grateful for any help.
Have you made any recent hardware or software changes ?
I suggest removing the drivers completely and reinstalling, you might also try an older version of the nvidia drivers and see if that help, also try disable SLI.
Some old games are just not engineered to work with new technology. Like they have too much power to know what to do with, so they quit.
Anyway, the last problem I had like yours was when trying to install a video type PCIe card. And it threw my computer into the black screen and repeated sound just like yours.
To fix the problem in the short term I fixed the driver, in long term I got rid of the PCIe card. (Blackmagic intensity pro designer deserves to be castrated)
So it looks like you've got corrupt hardware or drivers somewhere.
Also: you may want to think about upgrading your RAM. 4GB is a minimum for most new games. I run 10GB
