• PC randomly shuts down and reboots
    18 replies, posted
While playing Anno 2070 my PC just shuts down (no BSOD or error messages or anything of the sort) and then automatically reboots itself. I've had this happen twice now today and I have no idea what causes it. As far as I noticed none of my components are getting so hot it could cause a shutdown. Any suggestions on what I could check?
Has it happened while doing anything else or only during Anno 2070?
Has it happened while doing anything else or only during Anno 2070?
Nothing else thus far, but I haven't played many resource-heavy games like Anno since I got a new CPU and motherboard installed.
I would say that the parts are 1. Shutting down due to overheating. 2. Shutting down using to stress, whether it be from too much power draw, or something else. Also, nice avatar.
What brand/model is your PSU?

As for stress, I have no idea how to check how much power my components are drawing. I have a 1000 Watt PSU though so I doubt it's caused by a lack of power.
What brand/model is your PSU?
I honestly have no idea, I looked all over the thing earlier but couldn't find a brand on it anywhere. All I know is that this used to be a premade Alienware PC before I pretty much switched out every component save for the HDD and the PSU.
if it's randomly shutting off it may be a PSU issue. I had a similar problem after upgrading from a HD4670 to a HD5830. My PSU was rated at 625W which was sufficient, but one of the other figures (can't remember if it was amps or volts, had something to do with rails or some shit) wasn't high enough. the computer would shut itself off once the HD5830 would almost completely 'spool up', such as from an intense game. Problems stopped when I upgraded my PSU, half a year after I got the 5830 lol.

With my current setup (GTX 680, i5 4670K, 12 GB RAM, Asrock H87M Pro4) do I need 1000 Watt or could I go a bit lower?

But before you rush out to buy one, get a benchmark application like FurMark and leave it running for a few hours while monitoring the temperatures, if it crashes while the temperature is in normal range it's likely to be the PSU, also while you're at it give Prime95 a run as well to test the CPU and memory. I assume you've already checked the Windows event log?
I just tested a few other games, The Witcher 2 and Rome 2 to be exact, both causing similar if not higher temperatures on my hardware but neither of them crashing my PC after over an hour of play. Could this problem be caused by something specific to Anno? I checked the windows event log and it mentioned a few critical errors which caused a system reboot, saying the source is 'Kernel-Power'.
A kernel-power event does not necessarily mean a hardware failure, it can also be caused by driver issues and in some cases software. Could you post the full event log of the last couple of errors, right click on the error and select Copy > Copy Details as Text. Since other games are not causing problems I think we can rule out the PSU being the cause. Also I suggest updating all of your drivers, when you do play make sure you shut down everything possible including anti-virus. Have there been any recent hardware additions ? It would also be a good idea to generate a dump file, go to control panel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings then: Uncheck 'automatically restart'. Make sure 'Write an event to the system log' is checked Set the memory dump to 'Small memory dump'. Next time it happens, upload the .dmp file usually written to C:\Windows\minidump

How would I go about updating all my drivers, save for the ones for my GPU? As for recent additions I had a new motherboard and CPU installed, neither of which have really caused me any trouble up to this point.
It seems it was unable to write any error information before it shutdown, so that doesn't help unfortunately, I suggest running FurMark and Prime95, if that does not cause a crash then you can be reasonably sure it's not a hardware issue in which case it is most likely software which is causing the crash. As for drivers you can get them here, you might also want to update your BIOS. If all that does not help the best solution would be to try reinstalling the game and then Windows.
It crashed once again while I was testing a solution I found on another forum, however it did not create a dump file.
hold on. it's crashing after installing another motherboard and CPU? have you reinstalled Windows? every time you install a new motherboard, especially one that uses a different CPU socket, you should use a fresh install.
I have reinstalled Windows, yeah. I got the suggestion from a few other people as well, better safe than sorry. It's a recent reinstall as well so I kinda doubt it has anything to do with Windows, it might just be a problem with Anno considering it only happened in one of the missions so far and around the same point in that mission, but I'm not 100% sure.
What brand is your psu? I had this issue as well (although I installed a new psu/gpu) and the psu wasn't giving a steady flow of power so it would shut off during gameplay. I swapped from a Rosewill psu to Corsair.
I would say that the parts are 1. Shutting down due to overheating.
This may be the problem. Run Speccy and run Anno 2070 in windowed mode. Save your temps and upload them.
I'm slightly confused. Does the machine completely power down (I.E fans and everything stop), or does it just restart, with it constantly being powered? If it's the former, I'd say it's almost definitely hardware related. Possibly the motherboard or the power supply.
A 500W supply of good quality would do just fine. A 700W supply if you plan to install a very power hungry multi-GPU solution in the future.
