It sounds like it would have been an interesting addition. It should not replace essentials like the dispenser and teleporter though; maybe the shotgun or something.
I really didn't know what to expect when I saw this thread title.
This is really similar to an idea I had a while back. Some kind of alternate dispenser or dispenser add-on that allowed you to connect a dispenser to a sentry so it could auto-repair the sentry at some kind of low rate. Downsides would be that it would take the place of a weapon or prevent upgrading the dispenser while forcing you to build dispensers directly adjacent to sentries, forcing your sentry to have a big blind spot.
That said, I'm interested in seeing if they'll consider something similar to the repair node in a new form, like as an alternate dispenser or dispenser add-on. Engineer really needs a way to strengthen his base and allow him to roam; they're very big problems at the moment.
And either way, I'm glad to see they're hard at work on the update. If I recall correctly, the last time they made a "look at what we're brainstorming" blog post before a class update was the Heavy update. I like it when they're open about their information and ideas.

Well, their whole idea was that you should be able to leave your Sentry for a bit and go attack with your shotgun. Either way, it's probably best that they cut it.
Oh, they had seen that Spy and Pyro cartoon, as well. Cool.
In other news, our minds were blown this week when we saw Andrew Kepple's amazing Spy & Pyro cartoon. We've decided this is final proof that TF2 fans are smarter, more creative, and much better looking than fans of all other video games.
:mmmsmug:
Valve is like "Engineer Update! Yay!" and were all like "Yeah, whatever, get with Portal already.".
I love how informative the blog posts usually are. They always provide insight to the inner-workings of the TF2 Team and inevitably Valve as a whole.
This is usually how we approach our game design: Identify a problem, then discuss the ways it could be solved
They're doing this wrong. They're not solving any problems by offering alternatives to problems instead of fixing them.
I thought Zips logged in as the CSNation bot and started to spam
I like how they're letting us know there working on it instead of keeping it a secret right before release.
I'm looking at you, Episode 3 :argh:

Now that would be great to see, zips finally breaking under the collective "THIS IS LATE LOLOLOLOL"s of facepunch before going out in a manly spam of glory in the news node like all true reporters.

You're doing it wrong. They said they discuss methods to solve the problem, not "offer alternative problems". That makes no sense. They brainstorm to come up with various ideas on how to fix the problem is what they meant.
Awesome, really looking forward to this update
i want a mobile turret! this mobile turret deal half damage then a non-mobile turret and has half health but is quick to build and repair, and it move somewhat slow too.
this update is going to make or break the TF2 content updates, hoping they don't turn the engineer into a steam-powered scout
They uh, talk about knobs a lot.
how about episode three instead v:geno:v
Looking forward to some new Engineer weapons
I remember when the Engineer update seemed to begin after the Heavy update was released. Interesting stuff.
Secksual.
I totally read the title in the engineer voice, so I knew what to expect.

They should let the Engi mod the colors and skins of turrets, or give him something small to do while he's sitting in the base, that would help with the boredom.
The repair node idea reminds me of those Link Mines from Unreal Tournament 3
