Invest it in pioneering technologies? Build a space program? What else would a country do with extra cash?
They have a worse debt problem than the US does, surely they can work on that?

"Worse debt problem" wasn't accurate. They do have a higher debt but they've also shown they have the means to repay it.
I'm no economist, but can't they just store it in a big bank somewhere and keep it 'till they need it? Kind of like a regular person

I edited my post as "worse debt situation" wasn't the right thing to call it. However, they do have a greater debt than the US at 142% of their GDP as opposed to the US' 106%.

So? As long as a country knows how to spend the money and keeps the economy growing steadily I don't see the problem.

My point wasn't that they were in some sort of crisis, it was that since they have such a large debt and apparently have the means to repay it, they should do so immediately to save themselves from paying interest over decades.
They should use it to spread their glorious socialism and celtic heavy metal

Except you still have to pay interest on the debt when you pay it back early.

Not so fast. The monasteries were dissolved in the 16th century, so all that treasure actually belongs to the crown now.
