I feel the same way which is why the current game i am working on has 100% of my own creativity, I'm quite disappointed with a lot of game developers today. I swear once i am done with college I want to try to bring back the true meaning of games (a man can dream)
We need to go back to the days of expansion packs where your 30/40 bucks actually got you a substantial amount of content, instead of the nickel and dime DLC packs that offer you very little but typically cost more than an expansion pack when you bundle them together.

Content costs more to develop today, something not many people realize.

While it surely costs more, there are more people buying it, that's for sure.
I remember when Sims expansion packs in particular cost £10, and you'd get a shitload of new content (like holidays, pets, university, etc.)
I was in a Game store earlier this week, and saw a Sims 3 Katy Perry-themed stuff pack (just new items/clothes, no actual gameplay additions) and it was fucking £25. That's the same as the actual game costs to buy.
Absolutely agree. I kinda blame the widespread 24/7 internet connection for most of the problems in gaming today such as DRM and DLC.

Most major titles are dull, lowest common denominator forms of entertainment.
The cost seems astronomical for some of these game these days, and completely unnecessary. Especially as they seem to be getting shorter.
At least there is some hope. Sleeping Dogs is a bit of a sleeper hit, and even sequels like Assassins Creed 3 look very striking.
Need to cut all expensive DLC from the market, and allow for console games to be ported FROM the PC instead of to it. Not only will optimising be a lot better, but you won't water down content like Halo did. Man that series started sweet.
I seemingly miss those type of old-school addons/expansion packs that required you to buy a separate disk to actually play it along with the original game.
Now it's just merged together through digital downloads. :smith:

What the fuck are you on!?
How is DOOM or Duke Nukem anything above the lowest common denominator!?
For Christ's sake, I want to see what games you consider were high brow because you obviously are trapped in some alternate dimension where video games were never developed for children.
And this guy sounds like Molyneux.
Some points for you, angry fellow:
1) Since when did I say ALL?
2) I was talking about titles like CoD, which are ridiculously popular, and that's fine, but they're making the market bland with endless revisions and clones.
3) Have you even played Duke Nukem: Forever? I had fun playing it sure, but it was nowhere as good as 3D, admittedly for reasons we all know.
4)Games AREN'T developed for children. They are made for a market angle, but most are not made for anyone pre-teen. To quote you 'What the fuck are you on!?'. I never even mentioned children.
Most implies a majority which is a generalization.
And good job, you forgot other large hits like Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank, the only sales you're paying attention to are the ones that are multi-platform.
DN3D doesn't mean jackshit because 3D was extremely low brow, it was a good game but very low brow.
Games are developed for children, its been that way for a long time. Most of the major hits before the last generation were a majority of E to T rated games and a few M rated games.
There's a good chance that I didn't mention those games because they are good and I enjoyed them, and they're not genres that have saturated the market (or at least aren't at the moment).
And AGAIN, I'm not talking about games that are developed for children. I'm talking about the more adult genres.
