WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives gave final approval on Wednesday to the biggest overhaul of the U.S. tax code in 30 years, sending a sweeping $1.5 trillion bill to President Donald Trump for his signature. The House approved the measure, 224-201, passing it for the second time in two days after a procedural foul-up forced another vote on Wednesday. The Senate had passed it 51-48 in the early hours of Wednesday. In two provisions added to secure needed Republican votes, the legislation also allows oil drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and repeals the key portion of the Obamacare health system that fined people who did not have healthcare insurance.
Reuters
Socialism for the rich.
"Win" this is unpopular, this is pro corporation, this is not going to help many of the low income voters that ardently support him. This might actually chip that 35% base of his
holy shit, they actually passed something! it only took 11 months!
"win" edit: this isn't completely accurate, but if you want to see how vaguely this will change your taxes go here. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/12/17/upshot/tax-calculator.html 2nd edit: also here's a great graph, dems finally broke the 50% mark, +12ish on average. Holy hell, it's like the Reagan tax cuts on steroids. And since we're still feeling the effects of those cuts 40 years later, God knows what sort of consequences this bill will have...

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/congress-generic-ballot-polls/?ex_cid=rrpromo
It'll be interesting to see how the generic ballot and Trump's approval will change after this. With passing such an unpopular bill, I don't predict it will go well for Republicans or Trump.

Right when everyone was discussing this awful bill.
Anyone still supporting him won't give a shit. Anything that upsets liberals is a win.
How did people end up like this? Is fox news or brietbart telling them to act like this? Or are they insecure now that non white men can have important political positions. Like I support the democratic party platform because I think it will benefit the US more, net neutrality, recognizing climate change, protecting wildlife, improving healthcare. I don't support these positions because they trigger conservatives. edit: I don't think trump is telling his supporters to favor things that trigger people either.
Is fox news or brietbart telling them to act like this? Or are they insecure now that non white men can have important political positions.
Yes.
I'm unimpressed. The real change will come when they can pass a spending bill that addresses the deficits this will create.
There's something amusing about the fact that with a Republican-controlled House and a Republican-controlled senate, it still took Trump almost a year to get his first major piece of legislation done. Okay, the fact that this passed is still fucking depressing but you take them where you can.
I'm unimpressed. The real change will come when they can pass a spending bill that addresses the deficits this will create.
Tax cuts for the rich! Fewer services that the poor need! Whoopee!
republicans wrecking shit in their favour before they lose their power in 2018/2020
The bill is nice and full of pork for Republicans in Congress (and the President), too. No wonder Bob Corker's vote changed despite nothing being improved for the middle-class and poor -- he has lots of real estate investments and will make bank from this. And it's being sold on lies as usual. Estate taxes didn't kick in on anything less than $5.5 million; how many farmers are worth more than that? I'm betting a small minority. You can tell he's never been hungry unless he was being put on a weight-loss diet.
Holy hell, it's like the Reagan tax cuts on steroids. And since we're still feeling the effects of those cuts 40 years later, God knows what sort of consequences this bill will have...
I've seen people saying this bill, even before the latest changes that sweetened the pot towards the rich even more, is basically what was passed in 1928 when Republicans controlled both houses of Congress and the Presidency. Take a wild guess what 1929 is remembered for.
I'm unimpressed. The real change will come when they can pass a spending bill that addresses the deficits this will create.
They won't and can't, because they can't shove massive cuts to social services through filibuster-proof reconciliation. They need Democrat votes and the Democrats are not happy with being shut out of the legislative process for the entirety of 2017. Republicans will not cooperate with Democrats because they've staked their entire plan on exclusively pleasing who they really owe their allegiance to while tricking Republican voters into thinking they're included in this group.
I'm far from even financially comfortable, but this bill still equates to a tax cut for me... so I guess there's that.
republicans wrecking shit in their favour before they lose their power in 2018/2020
If they wanted to keep even a small majority after the midterms, wouldn't they not pass a bill barely anyone outside of the core gop base supports?
Does anyone know if that awful graduate student tax deduction removal is in this bill? My sister wants to get a masters and I don't know how much this would hurt her.
That website says I'll have a $40 tax increase? Okay...
Does anyone know if that awful graduate student tax deduction removal is in this bill? My sister wants to get a masters and I don't know how much this would hurt her.
That provision is not in this bill. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/12/15/us/politics/final-republican-tax-bill-cuts.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fpolitics
Does anyone know if that awful graduate student tax deduction removal is in this bill? My sister wants to get a masters and I don't know how much this would hurt her.
AFAIK that provision was removed over a week ago. But you never fucking know with these assholes in Congress since they've insisted on doing everything behind closed doors. Corruption requires secrecy, and the Republican Party is built on only those two crutches at this point. :bullshit:
Tax cuts for the rich! Fewer services that the poor need! Whoopee!
Why wouldn't we want that, tbh. It'd force people to actually see the ramifications of this bill beyond the already-existing automatic spending cuts. Rather than just it being thrown onto the debt.
Werent there some awful riders attached to this bill?
How did people end up like this? Is fox news or brietbart telling them to act like this? Observe almost any political discussion involving a person that loves triggering people and you'll find that they tend to vastly overestimate how powerful the people they're triggering are and assume that they've got some kind of horrible conspiracy going on.
Werent there some awful riders attached to this bill?
Well the individual mandate repeal, for one.
Well the individual mandate repeal, for one.
Ooh that's scummy in a year or two they can start screeching about the OBAMACARE DEATH SPIRAL with that although how the public will actually react is variable.
Well the individual mandate repeal, for one.
Your taxes will go up, AND your insurance rates will skyrocket. Thanks, Trump.
"win" edit: this isn't completely accurate, but if you want to see how vaguely this will change your taxes go here. I'd advise everyone to put their savings from the short term tax cuts into the market, their growth might help offset the tax increase when the personal cuts expire in the near future. [editline]20th December 2017[/editline]
about as vague as the multi-thousand dollar medical bills that keeps showing up in the mail 6 months after my wife's last "totally covered by health insurance" visit to the ER [editline]e[/editline] this chart is just trying to make me nervous
Do you itemize taxes? Those increases are for people who itemize. The bill doubles the standard deduction, both of those examples would get a tax cut if they switched to not itemizing.
